So I am a senior in high school and am considering going to the University of Texas next year. I am definitely into the party scene so I am very interested in being a part of greek life. However, I’ve heard that it is very hard for out of state students to get a bid to a top tier fraternity due to the fact that we don’t have the connections and aren’t able to simply drive to Austin for roundup or any of the other unofficial rush events. So do I have decent chances of getting a bid (I have a strong personality and social skills), or will all the bids be taken before I even arrive late this summer.

From what I’ve heard, (I’ll also be a freshman at UT next year) the “top-tier” fraternities usually have most of their rush class by the start of classes. I would get in touch with the rush captains and see what you can do. If you put in the effort, I don’t think it will be too hard to get a bid.
Ok, what about the mid-tier frats? Son is from out of state too. How does it work? are there rush parties at the beginning of the semester? What is the procedure? Thanks.
@d101parent @mustang2772 I am OOS and a junior in HS, UT is my top choice and I have a good chance of getting in. From what I know, yes, the pledge classes are basically set before classes start, this is because you rush during orientation and other times like Roundup if possible. Try to create connections now. Luckily for me my uncle was the president of a UT fraternity so I do have a really strong connection, and I’m sure I will have some other connections if I end up going to UT. Ask your friends or people you know if they know anyone from UT, and try to reach out by sending emails to the fraternities, or whatever else. A senior girl I know is going to UT and she is already getting rec letters for a sorority she’s rushing, so rush at UT is pretty different then it is at other schools.

See the link above for the fraternity FAQs. There is a form to register for recruitment. It says the earlier the better, so I’d register now. There are definitely events during orientation sponsored by the fraternities and then later in the summer. I would not wait until I got to school to start but since there is no formal start or stop date, there may still be bids given at that point.
In the “what happens during orientation” thread at the top of this forum, there is some information on fraternity recruitment.
Thank you @gettingschooled I searched your above link and found the exact website. Www.texasifc.org/register-for-recruitment-1/.
