I'm graduating college in a year with a degree in bioprocess engineering. How hard would it be to get into a vet school with that type of degree? My GPA is a 3.2 and it will stay around there.

Hi arliberatore,

Your 3.2 GPA is on the low end for vet school admissions. All the schools will look at cumulative GPA, and GPA for all science courses. You say you expect your grades to stay around that mark, but you still have a year left-

If you’re seriously considering applying, you’ll want to research any of the schools your interested in as each has unique requirements. UTK, for example requires 8 hours general inorganic chemistry with lab, 8 hours Organic chemistry with lab, as well as general biology / zoology, Cellular biology, genetics, etc. and a C or better grade in each. If you switch your career path, you’ll likely need to take additional classes to satisfy any requirements at your school/s of choice.

What made you consider vet school at this point? Have you considered veterinary pharmacology, which may be an easier segue after chemical engineering studies?

Your degree should be fine, as long as it allowed you to get in all the prerequisites. Have you been involved with a pre-vet club on campus? That has been a big help to my daughter who is also majoring in engineering but then wants to go to vet school. My daughter’s pre-vet club arranges volunteer positions that get her some of the hours required for her vet school application.
