I’d like to start by saying sorry if I uploaded this incorrectly. I just made my account this morning.
Well, I am applying ED to Williams College in the next few days. I absolutely love the school and can really see myself there. I plan on majoring in chemistry or bio to ultimately go pre-med. I have the support of the softball coach and a verbal agreement to play on the varsity softball team if I get into the school. I’ve heard a coach’s support can help a lot but since Williams is so competitive academically and DIII, I was still wondering if anyone has an idea of where my chances lie.
Here is some info about me:
Academics:
ACT Composite: 33 (Plus 32 Writing) —I’m waiting back on my most recent scores (hopefully 34 superscore)
SAT Subject Tests- Math1: 760, Math2: 800
Unweighted GPA: 4.0/4.0
Rank: 5/352
EC’s:
Student Body/Council President
American Cancer Society Club President and Founder
Human Rights Club President
National Honor Society
Math Team
Heroes and Cool Kids (Peer Leadership)
American Cancer Society Board Member
130 Volunteering Hours at the hospital and library
Softball:
All County, All Area, All Division
Varsity Starter 4 years
Team MVP, Team Sportsmanship Award
I wasn’t able to attend Windows but I did get to stay at the school for a few days to go to a camp and interview with the coach. I also toured and attended an information session then.
I would be careful. The NESCAC schools use a system of tips and slots for recruited athletes. Did the coach mention either of these words to you?
If not you may be considered a ‘nice to have’. Coach support can mean very different things. You could be placed into the general admission pool, which is much much more competitive than the athlete pool.
Did the coach ask you to apply ED or did you offer ?
Many varsity athletes are not admitted as TIPS (only 66 total per year) or even slots – rather, they are students who are otherwise admissible even without athletics, who the coach flags to admissions as someone they want – but without using a TIP or slot, because none is necessary. Given your strong academic profile, you sound like someone in this latter category, which means your chances are very good indeed, but of course there are never any guarantees … good luck, and I anticipate you will be an Eph next year!
Thank you I sure hope so! I know she went to the Dean with my academic profile and he gave her the go ahead on recruiting me. I don’t know if this helps in determining which category I would be in??
Oh I forgot also… I am submitting my application to the coach as well as the admissions office and then the coach is bringing my application (and those of the other recruits) to admissions. I don’t know if this changes anything.
@AConroy11, Williams takes its sports very seriously. If the coach has had your file pre-read and has asked you to apply ED1, then Coach Herman must really want you. Know you are going to be on pins and needles, but your application sounds very promising. Williams is a top notch school! Best of luck and keep us posted
You have a lot to get you in combined with little reason you would be denied, other than Williams’ low acceptance rate itself (though this is moderate for ED: 41%), so I think your chances are excellent. For validation of your choice, Williams gets a mention on this list: “The Experts’ Choice: Colleges with Great Pre-med Programs” (available online). Good luck.
It sounds like the coach is using a slot for you. This is good. Highly suggest you have a direct and open conversation with the coach.
“Coach, I really want to come here. But I’m worried because the admission rate is so low. How many kids in the past with my level of support from you have been rejected?”
Thank you very much! I’m applying tomorrow so fingers crossed. I’ve heard that students who graduate from Williams have a very very good chance to get into the graduate school of their choice. Do you know anything about this?
@AConroy11 Since your applying early decision your chances are so much better especially with your high ACT score. The acceptance rate is typically +40% for those that apply early decision since people that apply early show a lot of commitment and are a much smaller high quality applicant pool. Your chances of getting in are really good, probably +60% chance of admission.
