I am a freshman in high school in NYC. My high school is for Construction Trades, Engineering and Architecture. I am in the Chess Club, History Club, Science Club, and the Robotics Club. I am on the cricket team and plan to join baseball. My grades so far are mostly 80s/90s which I will improve. I am of Indian descent. I'm also in The National Honor Society. I can play the piano, trumpet, guitar, and the drums. Every now and then I do charity events with my church. Anything that I should add/improve? Any tips on getting into Yale? Chance me.

Hey Justin,

I’m a senior in HS finalizing my app for Yale so I’ll give you my two cents.

First of all, you have already significantly decreased your chances for Yale. Why? Because you are asking completely strangers what to do with your high school career. If I were to tell you that Yale heavily recruits mariachi singers and that they are almost guaranteed admission, you’d probably do it and live miserably for the remainder of HS. You really need to explore your interests. It seems like you are great with music and are involved with your church so maybe you could do this: start a music program for needy kids at your church. I don’t know. Just be creative. Some kids get into Yale with two extracurriculars.

Second, unless your school is known for extreme grade deflation. You’ll need grades in the mid to high 90’s and be ranked in the top 5% of your class to have a chance at this school. Grades are important.

Third, by the time you apply to Yale I’m sure the admission rate will be below 5% (if it already isn’t for RD applicants?). That means 1 kid will get the famous letter for every 19 other’s that will get a polite no. Keep that in mind and do not live high school looking forward to college and college looking forward to grad school and grad school looking forward to a big job and a big job looking forward to a bigger job.

Good luck!

As a freshman, your chances of attending Yale next year are ZERO.

Seriously, why are you even asking for chances at this point with three more years of HS ahead of you? Work hard and ask the question later (much later) if you’re still interested in the opinions of a bunch of strangers.

Edit: Was writing when the post above hit. I agree completely with M&L

justin: you’ve been in high school for about 6-7 weeks and you’re already asking about your chances to get into a school like Yale. How about we focus on finishing Freshman year with solid grades and preparing for a rigorus curriculum for your remaining HS years instead? You’ll have an ulcer before Christmas if this is how you’re leading your life.

You know when I decided to apply to Yale? Thanksgiving of my Senior year.
