Getting involved with one's alma mater

My alma mater has located me, probably due to my daughter mentioning in a form she filled out that I'm an alum. I haven't been involved in my alumnae association since graduating from college over 30 years ago. Actually, I wasn't all that involved in the college before I graduated, what with being a commuter and spending 3-4 hours on the train & bus roundtrip each day. But I've been envying those of you who are still attached to the school you graduated from. And I've started (38 years too late) getting excited about my college. Is it pointless to try to get involved now?

No,it is not pointless. I met a college rep from my alma mater at a college fair last year. We talked for awhile and I was recruited for local interviews. This is my second year and it has been a lot of fun. I told them the students prefer recent grads who can comment more on social life, my info is pretty dated. I do try to talk to current students there to get updated but it has been a great experience to reconnect. Enjoy, it helps bring life full circle.

I have been involved with my alma mater for the past 15 years, and have found it very enjoyable. I work as an alumni interviewer, and also have done things at the national level with my college alumni association.

I've also met some nice people, including classmates whose paths had never crossed mine before. In fact, one of my fellow alumni interviewers lived in my dorm, and I had known his roommate, however I did not meet him until I started alumni interviewing in my current small city. He lives just a mile away from me. I also learned that another alum, who graduated about a year ahead of me, lives a block from my house, and is a writer, something that I have also done.

My current city is a college town where sports are idolized as is partying by students. It is very from where I went to college, and the type of places that I enjoy. Getting to know some alum has helped me meet more people who have interests in common with mine.

Arizonamom and Northstarmom, Thank you. I'm going to do it!
