I really want to apply to some Ivys but I think some of my teachers would say crap and laugh at me and not take it seriously....Any advice?

If you really want to apply to an Ivy League School, and you believe that you have what it takes to get accepted, then who cares what your teachers will say? Unless it is those teachers that you want to write your letters of recommendation, but most likely, those teachers really cared about you as a student and would be enthusiastic to see you putting yourself out there academically. That is my advice.

I’m sure the teachers will get jealous because they didn’t get to go to an IVY. Then you’ll be the one laughing.

^ My history teacher attended a HYPSM for undergrad and Penn for graduate school. My math teacher attended MIT (u-grad) + ivy. My chem teacher last year attended MIT as well.

IF they became teachers and went to those schools, I say what a waste of money.

Why don’t you not tell your teachers?

If you really want it, go for it. I’m not sure what “some” means, but if even you don’t think you have much of a chance of getting in, I suggest you only apply to the one you really like, maybe the two you really like.

Well my school requires you to apply to at least five colleges I want to apply to:
University of Oklahoma
Oklahoma State University
NYU
MIT
Harvard

My stats can be found [thread=1048501]here[/thread]
Tell me what you think. Do you think about my list should I narrow it down or take off the ivys? Or What?

I have held the same feelings, but it’s whatever-our lives and not theirs. 1 teacher that wrote me a rec letter went to an Ivy, and my counselor went to a top school for undergrad. Sure, some teachers joked about the # of top schools on my list, but that’s ok I guess. I say apply and hopefully you end up at a school where you’ll be happy and thrive!

^^ What do you want to study?

MIT and Harvard are big reaches, but that’s fine provided that you’d be okay with attending OU or OKState. I’m not sure why NYU is on there.

You have two safeties, one match, and two mega reaches. There are big gaps in the spectrum of schools.

Try
1 Oklahoma school
Rice
Vandy
Emory
Duke

or
1 OK
Rice
Vandy
Duke
Harvard/MIT

I have no respect for NYU because of their poor FA policies.

But apply to the schools you want, not the ones that meet someone else’s expectations for you.

Yeah I don’t know anything about Rice, Candt, Emory, or Duke…

And what are they and why are they so poor?

NYU has a reputation for letting people in, and then not coming anywhere close to being able to provide enough FA to go. It is called an “admit/deny.” But they are more than willing to let students take $40K in loans each year.

If you don’t know anything about Rice, Vandy, Emory, or Duke, I would say you have a lot of learning to do. Why did you choose MIT and Harvard?–on name recognition?

Time to disprove the first half of your user name, especially if you want out of OK.

That’s not inherently bad. I’d rather see the OP have two safeties to choose between.

This I did not know I might have to think twice about it

Yeah I will get on that right away…And I picked those schools because of this thread I saw [thread=1022048] Nerd College[/thread]

Yeah I know…

It is not inherently bad. But many state U’s are essentially auto admits, especially for someone with this strong stats like this candidate (they are actual auto admits in my state.) If he/she is limited in terms of the # of schools to apply to, cutting back on the safeties and adding more medium selective schools would seem to be a better way to utilize a limited number of chances. The initial list seemed to have two uber safe, too uber hard, and one medium that has a bad FA rep.

I take back what I said before. It sounds like you’re pretty much taking a shot in the dark with your college choices. I think you should do some serious research to see what meets all your personal qualifications for a good college. May I recommend a college match tool like the one that can be found on collegeboard? That’ll help you figure out what it is your looking for.

Yep my state schools are auto admits they actually have it listed as to what you have to do to get in. And I worded it wrong I can apply to as many schools as I want but I has to be at least 5 so I can apply to more.

Yeah I tried to use that awhile back ago but it gave me like 100+ matches!

Well, why don’t you tell us what you like in a school?

Location–urban, suburban, or rural?
Small (under about 2500), medium(2500-15,000) or big student body(over 15000)?
Greek scene? Party school or more academic/nerdy?
What are you looking to major in? Do you want a lot of flexibility in course choice or is a core curriculum and rigid requirements more appealing?
etc. etc.

Is your school even allowed to force you to apply to 5 schools…? That’s just not right.
