Getting materials in for deadlines

For deadlines, do all materials have to be in by that date (SAT, Transcript, Rec Letters)? Or is it just the application part? I'm thinking the latter but I just want to double check...

And also, is it wise to rush SAT scores (so they get there within the week) for schools with rolling admissions rather than regularly sending them (which takes like a month)?

Your application should be COMPLETE by the due date. Oftentimes the SAT scores or letters of recommendation get delayed in processing, but honestly why would you not send them in on time? The application is the hard part to complete!

I rushed my SAT scores, but I don't know whether that is necessary. It made me feel more comfortable with the situation and money isn't tight enough for the price to have mattered.

Except for exceptional circumstances beyond your control, there should be no reason why your file shouldn't be complete by the deadline. Scores should be sent in well in advance (unless you happen to be taking the last SAT they accept); you should check with your teachers to make sure they sent your rec letters.

Examples of exceptional circumstances beyond your control:
- UC's granted an extension to people affected by the Southern California wildfires back in Fall 2007.

Sometimes if your teachers are simply bogged down in other stuff, then your recs may end up arriving a few days late. You can check to see if your teachers have finished your recs, but you can't physically send their rec.

For deadlines: make sure everything you can control is in...ie make sure the application is filled out, and requests for teacher recs (make sure these requests are made well in advance...about a month or two in advance), transcripts, and to send test scores are made...and that's all you can control. Adcoms know that there are sometimes even people working in the schools make mistakes, so they realize things like are out of your control and are fairly forgiving if someone else didn't hold up their end of the bargain as far as your application.
