Getting odd circumstances in my app/essay...

Hey,
So, I have had some weird situations come up in my life. I live with my half sister and half brother in law, and am extremely independent. since sophomore year i have really been the one making decisions a parent usually would, and all the things (grades, school involvement, etc) is completely on my initiative... etc etc etc. My father also died in the past few years.

Anyway,
I really didn't want to make this my essay, because it is not what has defined me, for i have not let it do such. however, i wanted to include this circumstance somewhere on my apps, because I do feel that it would help show me as a little different, and add another dimension to my application. overcoming obstacles, initiative, independence, i guess even emotional stability and strong will power, etc all flow from the circumstances.

Some schools (I think Pomona) have a little box for odd things such as this. But, for other schools, how could I get this stuff into my application?
Also - for schools that use it - i'm using the Common App.

Thanks so much, and any tips would be appreciated!!!

The common application has the "Additional Information" box on the page with the essay topics (online). I'm not too sure about any other schools though.

and I think your situation definitely sets you apart. From just reading what you wrote up there, you already seem more mature than others. Maybe you can add some reference to your current status in your essay, without making it the main topic. I'm not too sure though =/
Good luck!
