Getting on the transfer path early

I'm currently a freshman majoring in Biology (pre-med) at UCI and am looking to transfer after my sophomore year. I'm in the honors program here. I took a quarter to decide if I wanted to stay, and now I know that I do not want to. I'm aiming pretty high with UPenn and Brown as my reach schools. I also want to (re)apply to USC and Berkeley.

Some numbers:

College GPA: 3.918 (22 graded units)
High School GPA (UW): ~3.7 (W): ~4.1
SAT: 2270 (Super: 2300 (I know USC asks for it, but I don't know if it really matters))

I've only had one summer session and fall quarter to accumulate units and GPA and I have 5 more quarters ahead of me, so my GPA is likely to change (but hopefully not by too much). I'm confident I can maintain above a 3.8.

I'm also slated to be the president of a pre-health club next year. As of now, I'm managing just one of the smaller volunteer projects, which I'm involved in myself. I hope to find a lab either next quarter or next year to work in, but I'm not entirely sure about how to go about that quite yet.

So, I'm just looking for some general advice about what to do and what to plan to do. Are there any transferring resources that I'm not aware of? Any input is appreciated!

In advance: Thank you so much!

Read through the sticky threads at the top of this forum, and you will have just about the best transfer-prep advice possible.

If you cannot learn to like UCI, then you need to find a dead-on safety to add to your list. Please remember that Med School is hideously expensive, and that you will almost certainly end up paying for that with student loans. Graduating from the place where you can complete your B.S. for the least amount of money (especially the least amount of student debt) can ultimately be more important than actually enjoying your undergrad experience.

What could I consider as a safety given the qualifications I put in my original post? I’m not too sure how I am to evaluate which schools I can consider reaches, matches, or safeties.

Is there particularly something about UCI that you don’t like? Or do you just feel like you don’t fit in well into its program or social scene? I’m not familiar with the pre-med tracks of advice, so I’ll give you my best advice.

Your high school grades are very good, and so are your test scores. Did you get into USC and Berkeley before? If so, I think you have a chance at both as a transfer if your college grade is consistently high (like 3.7+). The thing with the UC schools is that they require you to have 60 transferrable credits by the time you apply, so you have to wait until the end of your sophomore year to attempt it. Luckily, since you go to a UC, all of your credits are likely to transfer over. Have you thought about UCLA? I hear its program is “amazing.”

At this point, all you can do is to continue to work hard. You seem pretty involved already and make sure all the ECs are relevant to what you want to do with your career (the more focus, the better it looks for the school). For USC, i’m sure you can apply if you’ll have 30 credits by the time you enroll there, but I believe certain programs have specific requirements.

I would make a definitive list of schools that you are interested in transferring to…like ten that just strikes you. After you compile it, go research each school and look for the program you are looking for. If it doesn’t have it, don’t even bother with it. I would minimize your list to three or four schools just to be on the safer side and if you want to get out of UCI asap. Look at the requirements for each school meticulously so you will set by the time you apply to the schools. It would suck to be missing a requirement and not being able to get accepted because of that.

Also, I would start your transfer essay about four months prior to the application time, so you will have everything done and set by the time you can submit your essay. Depending on your school, the essay should be focused more on why their program is best for you. Whatever you write, don’t get carried away and talk about what you don’t have at UCI. Talk about UCI under a positive light: talk about the amazing professors you met, the great friends, the experience, etc. and how all of these prepared you for something more and how you are going to bring something new to the table at their school. Even go in-depth with a certain program and write about what particularly intrigues you about it (specific professor or research that goes on). It’s all about over-kill with transfers, especially at competitive schools. Show them that you’re worth it and that you’re totally serious about your career and, ultimately, making a name for their institution.

For now, just continue your hard work and show leadership skills, which you seem to have. Honestly, your doing fine and just keep up the work. Good Luck!

Thank you for the input! It means a lot that people are so willing to help.

The only school out of the four I listed that I did NOT apply to was UPenn. I got rejected by the other three. Does not applying the first time around mean anything?

Also, how do I go about gauging what schools I can consider “safeties?” I know I want to transfer, so I want to be able to figure out which schools I can be confident I will transfer into.
