I'm a junior right now, and I've taken 4 AP classes last year and got straight As all of last year. I've got straight As in 9th grade too. I've took 5 AP and 1 honors class this year, and I might get a B in AP Comp Sci. I have As in all other classes. I want to go to HYPSM, other Ivies, Cal Tech, and other such colleges. Do you think think this will effect my admission into such colleges?

If you keep taking APs and doing well on them, then I'm sure they won't care about one junior-year B. That's 9 APs, wow! I think they look for a lot of rigorous coursework, so I think as long as SATs and EC's are good, then that many As will probably drown that B.

Tell them to look on this site and sift through the threads. Plenty of people get into HYPS with even more than 1 B, but lots of people with straight A's and near perfect board scores get rejected, so there is no guarantee, unless they are willing to donate a library.

I sense your anxiety and worry, but don't sweat just 1 B. I'm sure you've heard this a million times, but one B in that deluge of As will not be a problem. If it were the other way around, then you would have a problem. Study hard for the SATs and participate in meaningful ECs.

If one B is your problem, you'll be perfectly fine. :) Honestly, don't worry about it. Like hpg90 said, plenty of people with B's get into the Ivies. Some people have even gotten a few C's! Just shine in your personality and work your hardest.

You'll be fine, I think. It largely depends on exactly what field you want to work in. If you're going for medicine/engineering, be careful in the future and keep those test scores up. If your dream is business school, don't worry at all. If anything, remember that Ivy admissions is a lot more than grades.

i totally agree. however, 9 b's is a problem for hypsmc. you're fine, tell your asian parents to chill. keep up your academics, do well on the SATs, ECs, and etc. good luck!

I got a 35 on my ACTs and had a D, C-, C-, C+ on my junior year transcript and got into a pretty damn good school...

Instead of worrying about your "B" worry about the rest of your app, definately if your going for the ivies. While talking to a Yale Admissions officer recently, he asked me a pretty simple question. '

"You understand we have 20,000 applicants, right? We can only accept 1000 or so? Heres the point. An applicant needs to know what makes him beat out 19,000 of the best applicants in the world, applicants who had illegal immigrant parents and horrible family situations, applicants and refugees from genocides, and kids from the inner city. An applicant needs to know, because only then can he tell us."

My point is this. One "B" won't make you stand out in this huge pool. Focus on yourself, dedicate yourself to a goal, and try your hardest.
