Getting Organized and Cleaned

Well, I'm trying to get organized so I can be fresh for the new semester coming up. But, its a bit difficult. Does anyone have some tips in getting their room clean and organized?

Personally I like to put everything thats out on my table and shelf into my drawers or wherever. Just doesn’t have to touch the floor and desk/shelf. From there I wipe down my desk and shelf. Afterwards I get a broom and broom my floors and put everything into a dustpan. Then I get my Swifter stick and clean the floor and then I just take everything in my drawer that I moved back into place. It’s always nice to have nothing out so you clean 100% of the floor and surfaces.

For cleaning up:
Set a timer for five minutes. Pick up all books.
Another five minutes. Remove stuff from table.
Five minutes: make bed.
Five minutes: Use a paper bag and throw any old papers/notes in it to trash them. … and so on, depending on your chaos.
The intervalls and the monotasking make something otherwise daunting really doable… I always reward myself with a little piece of chocolate after every interval. If you need to see results, start at one side of the room and clean it up perfectly. Then proceed to the next place.
If you don’t know where to put something, throw it away or put it onto your bed. After organizing everything, clean the floor, that really makes a difference. Also clean windows, and the desk.

For getting organized:
Well, buy boxes. They make everything look organized. Find places for things that lie around. Like your keys or the library books or whatever. Also, identify the points where your messes always seem to grow (my desk for example) and try to put cleaning them into your schedule.

Thanks, I’ll check out the Container Store for some boxes.

My advice is just psychological: don’t look at cleaning and organizing as one big, daunting task. Break it down into smaller, doable steps in your mind. Rather than resolving to “clean your room,” resolve to clean your desk, or fold all of your clothes, or pick up all of your books, etc. Small steps will make it easier.

Once you have everything cleaned, I also recommend that you do a small clean-up every week. If you keep on top of it, you should only need 20 to 40 mins to straighten up each week. It’s way easier to just devote some time to it each week, rather than waiting for the mess to pile up and having to give up a whole afternoon or a whole day to clean it up later.

well, college is as good a time as any to start learning something as simple as how to clean your own room.
