Our financial situation just took a dive, and we are now looking at not attending a private school. Has anyone gone through this? What does it take to get out of the early decision contract?

Contact them… usually they’ll try to change your financial aid package so you can still attend, but for severe financial reasons they’ll generally let you out of the ED deal

Do they ask for financial verification usually?

Did you not withdraw other applications? Hopefully you’ll be able to show that you had the acceptance to the other school before the ED decision?

Schools know the economy will cause such situations. If you handled it properly and are attending a cheaper school, there should be no problem.

Wouldnt you have verificartion available? Security account records, letter from employers?

Contact the school immediately to discuss the change in your family’s financial situation. Ordinarily an expensive private school will let you out of your ED contract fairly easily if you are planning to attend your cheaper, less selective State university instead. They would be far less sympathetic if you wanted to attend another private school, however.

I’m sure that this year there will be more ED students asking for adjustments in their aid package or to be let out of the ED contract, since the full extent of the economic downturn was not known in Oct. and Nov. when many of these students applied.
