I am an incoming freshman to Yale in the fall, and I applied as a mathematics or physics major. Recently, though, I changed my mind, and I want to major in something more like biology and towards medical school. I'm scared that if I don't change my major before they choose the freshman advisors, I'll get plugged into an advising system that won't be helpful towards getting into medical school. Should I call Yale to change my advising system, and, if so, what should I say?

You’re advisor assignment usually has nothing to do with your major. Some do, by chance but most don’t. So don’t worry about changing it now, because it won’t make a difference.

In addition to what sgtpepper said, there are separate advisors for med school anyways :)

My freshman adviser met with me maybe twice this past year, and she doesn’t do anything related to my academic interests at are. I think they’re randomly assigned anyway. Your sophomore year, however, is when you start picking your adviser, and when that time comes, you can pick someone in the biology department (or math/physics department if you change your mind again).

If you’re that antsy about getting a head start in the pre-med business, consult UCS. Pre-med advising is separate from general academic advising.

Don’t forget that there can be great advantages in having a freshman advisor who is in completely a different field. Mine was a chaplain who had spent a lot of time in China. He tried (unsuccessfully) to get me to major in Chinese, but he took me to my first ever really high-quality Chinese meal. (Back then, hardly anyone in the US knew that high-quality Chinese food existed. All I had ever seen was chow mein, sweet and sour pork, and moo goo gai pan. Real Chinese food was a revelation.)

By the end of the year, I had a new advisor who was a famous professor in the field in which I was majoring. But I remained friendly with my original advisor throughout my college years.

All right. Thanks for the helpful responses!

lol… I think I put psychology when I applied… now I’m a History major.

My daughter, not at Yale, applied as a Art History major and now is a Spanish major with a minor in Psychology. She just informed me she may change to a double major in Spanish and Linguistics. Hopefully, by her senior year she will know. ;)

^she should since we don’t have minors. yet.

Did you read my post? My daughter is NOT at Yale. My son is an incoming freshman at Yale.
