Getting ready for MCATs

I'm currently starting my third year at UCSD and would like to know when I should take the MCAT, and when do I start applying for med schools (during the summer after 3rd year?)

Also, should I start prepping over the summer now? I don't plan to take a prep course, so I'd like any recommendations of good MCAT test prep books. Thanks!

1.) Anytime you want over the course of your junior year. See thread "Timing Alert".

2.) Prep should take about two months before you plan to take it.

Um no start early..... I am an upcoming senior in high school and i'm currently putting in 4-5 hours a day for 2 months. The thing is I found two people who are juniors in college and who are also studying for the MCAT and so I just join them everyday for 4-5 hours. I know that it is wayyyyy too early but hey its a beast of a test and starting early can never hurt you.

It's a beast of a test only because you're a junior in HS. After you've taken your med school prereqs in college, the material will seem like a piece of cake. The amount of info covered on the MCAT may seem daunting now but it's really only a fraction of what you'll learn in your gen chem/orgo/physics/intro bio college courses. That's why it's best to study for 2-3 months AFTER you've taken your prereqs.

I myself picked up a MCAT prep book halfway through my sophomore year of college and discovered that it was scored out of 45 and was a 8-hour long test. Said, "Okay, cool." Didn't look at it again until the following May after my sophomore year. Took the MCAT in August, three months later, and that was the end of that.

omfg, norcalguy i love you fro this post.
i was looking at the MCATs myself, now that my mom has made me really scared bout med school.and i was like "what...the...****..." yeah so i hope that the test is easier once i get into college.
