Getting ready for move-in

Houstonmom: Yes, Pomona’s beds look to be the same as CMC’s, but once again, I don’t think you can request housekeeping to loft the bed for you before you arrive. It’s really very easy to do yourself if you have two people. Plus then you can decide for yourself what height you want the bed to be at! I always adjusted mine at what’s called “Level Two” on your webpage so that I could fit a cube fridge and some storage bins underneath.

For those of you that are coming from other parts of the country - remember, we usually have a dry heat. Even on the hottest days, it usually cools down in the evening, and stays cool until about 8-10am. The trick is keeping the windows open and getting as much cool air in as you can, then closing the windows and drapes for the hottest part of the day. Using your fan to blow the hot air out and cool air in, will cool the walls and everything else. That will help keep the room manageable.

Thanks Chopsticks we will call housekeeping/ maintenance when we get to the room to see what we need to raise the bed ourselves if need be.

anotherparent. Would air exchanger fans ~ one blowing out another blowing in be necessary? I think it is over kill, but my husband thinks its a good idea.

It would depend how the rooms are set up. If you are blowing air out, more air has to come in somewhere. Ideally another window is great - or an outside door. If there is no other windown, more likely the new air would come in from under the door, if there is no place else for it to come in. If that faces a hallway, then i think the air would be just as warm as the air you are bringing in.

With a regular fan you can blow out the hot air, then see where the new is coming from.

This is the fan it appears to be a single unit. I just read that this has been one of the coolest summers on record, maybe over kill.

2 things to consider: Are you sure it will fit the window it’s intended for? Are you sure the roommate will want to have a fan in the window? My older kid and his freshman roommate had a hard time agreeing on the status of their one shared window, so I might ask first.

houstonmom2 - It is also possible that Pomona has regulations against putting fans in windows - could be considered a hazard?

@Houstonmom2 - yes it has been a pretty good summer, though I wouldn’t want to be completely without our AC (I live 30 miles west, similar climate) Still, summer is not over until at least the end of Sept, sometimes into October. But, yes, what everyone says about the window. I have seen those in local stores, though.

Thanks for the great advice. We will definitely wait to get the fan/s when we arrive. Does anyone know what time classes usually get out on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving? Is it just up to the individual professor?

houstonmom2 - I don’t think there is any way to know until your student has registered for all of his/her classes. After a horrified look at the cost of flights on the 24th, we arranged for our daughter to fly home Thanksgiving morning - much, much less expensive. She’s not looking forward to getting up for an 8:30am flight, but she’ll be here by 10:30 and will not miss out on any Thanksgiving fun.

I must be a bad mother. I booked my D home on a 1:00AM flight on Wednesday morning so she will be missing whatever her Wednesday class is. Going all the way to the east coast just takes too long and if she comes home any later it is just not worth it. I also booked her back on a Saturday evening flight - Sunday was just too expensive and I didn’t think she could afford possible delays resulting in missing Monday classes also.

NJ Mom of 2 - Noooooo… I think that means you’re a good mother. If our daughter had to fly cross-country, she’d be missing Wednesday classes, too!

To chopsticks3092, or anyone else who might know: Does Wig Hall (or any of the other dorms, for that matter) have DVD and/or VCR players in the lounge? Thanks for any info!

Yes, Wig does have a dvd player (not sure about VCR). Even if Wig does not, you can go to another dorm, unplug their dvd player and move it to Wig (thats what I did last year). However, I’m not sure if they secured them later on last year, but nonetheless Wig/ every dorm should have one.

Thank you, Anonymous91. My daughter will bring some movies along, then.

D would watch DVDs on her computer - and sometimes be joined by friends in her room.

Does anyone know if items that have been sent to Pomona can be picked up prior to move in day?

Yep! Packages that have been sent should be in their temporary package room located right next to the Coop store. They should send you an email to your school address whenever it arrives. They do get backed up sometimes right now though due to the mass number of packages being sent for the whole incoming class, though!

The only problem I would see about actually picking up the package before move-in day is that you won’t have your school I.D yet. You can probably just show them your state I.D. and be okay though. (Not sure, though!)

Also - a warning to people who have already booked Thanksgiving tickets. Some Professors DO still hold classes that Wednesday. My freshmen year I actually had a chemistry midterm on that day.

Most Professors are willing to be flexible if they can, but if you can wait to find out your test schedules (usually on the first day of classes), I would wait. At least then you can talk to your Professor about alternate arrangements before booking the flight.

Thanks so much.
