I pre-enrolled for ILRCB 100 Sec 2 with Cowie on the pre-enroll day for freshman, November 13th, 2006. I had been wanting the class because I heard the other professor (Salvatore) basically handed out a C- to everyone in the class, so I didn't want my GPA killed because of some pompous ass with some kind of agenda. The class is also at 11:40 as opposed to 8:40 so time was also another big factor. Fast forward to a few weeks ago during winter break when the "finalized" schedules were released, and I was still in the same class, and I had gotten into my first choice writing seminar. Hooray. Booklists come out, and I bought a few books before coming to school on amazon. I bought the rest of the books this Sunday, January 21st, 2007. Mind you, I checked yesterday and I was still in his class. Now I go to his first class today, and when the attendance sheet comes to me, I don't see my name on there. I talk to him after class and tell him that I pre-enrolled for this class, so there should be no reason why I'm not on the list. I check just the facts a few minutes ago and I see that I'm magically changed to the other class. This of course is a problem because I have a section for another class that conflicts with it. I can't change the section because the other one is full.

What should I do? I'm going to Virginia Freeman tomorrow to try to get this worked out. I've already bought all the books for Cowie, and this is BS that it was changed. My feeling is that after I brought it up with Cowie, it was changed some time today to "fix" the problem. Are they allowed to do this? I was pre-enrolled, so this seems like BS to me. I didn't wake up for that worthless 6AM course enroll to be screwed over like this. This class was my top priority and I was so happy that I was able to get in. This is just so frustrating. :(

If this doesn't get worked out, I might drop the class, fulfill my science distribution for this semester and get those all out of the way. Then as a sophomore next semester, I will get first pick over freshman when trying to enroll for this course.

I'm just going by what the reviews on ratemyprofessors.com say. A majority of them say that he is a hard grader, and that he has a nickname of C- Salvatore. I haven't taken the class yet obviously so I won't know, but 20+ students probably aren't wrong. The C- bit might be a bit of an exageration, but it still says a lot about what kind of grader he is.

I'm sure he's not that bad. People who are motivated to post on ratemyprofessors.com usually have strong feelings towards a teacher (whether they be negative or positive), resulting in exaggerated reviews.

i dunno, maybe you should just drop and take it next year...like i understand, he can't be that bad blah blah, but if there's no need to risk it, you almost had might as well drop. perhaps i'm wrong. i guess that it also depends on the median grades and ratemyprofessors stuff.

and yea ps that is the oddest thing that i have ever heard. i wish that there was some sort of written proof that you could show them. otherwise, who knows, it's your "simple-minded child who was only smart enough to be admitted to Cornell but is still inferior because of his age"'s word against an administrator's. argh. good luck tho, i hope that it all works out.

it doesn't matter what he wants to give out for a grade ... the grade distributions must be equal for the same class under different professors.

I went to Freeman today and she said I had to take it this year since it was a requirement for CB 201 next fall. It looks like the median grade was a B+ for the class last year, but I don't know if that was Salvatore or not. Anyway, looks like I have no choice. I gotta go return the books though and get all of the new ones.
