Getting smarter

so my parents, being the typical asian parents, want me to be perfect. They expect me to get all As on everything... Expect, I'm not that smart and sometimes I don't get all As... Even if I study all day, its not guranteed that I will get all As because I'm not a genius...

So does anyone know a way to make me smarter that its guranteed I'll get all As on everything like some of you people here who got accepted to Harvard...

i'd like to know also :)

You grow smart usually out of a love for knowledge and not because your parents want you to get good grades.

getting straight A's does not necessarily mean that you are smart. It does mean that you turn in almost all of your work and are a very good test taker.

Shazilla is right on the bulls eye there.

Grades don't show how smart you are. The SAT shows how smart you compared to a report card but still isn't all that accurate.

The SAT does not measure intellect. It simply measures how good of a test taker you are. If you take the right courses or study from the right books, you'll learn how to manipulate the questions and you'll know what the SAT makers are looking for.

I really hope that you're not trying to "get smart" just to try to get into a school like harvard because people like that usually have a hard time no matter how hard they try

not everybody has to be under the classification of "a genius" to be smart.. for example there are people who are street savvy (not me) and they're usually the ones who become the business tycoons, sucessfull, etc

i dont think that theres a formula to make you any smarter in the way you're thinking and to say you want a "way to to guarantee all A's" means that you care a little bit too much about school and less about understanding and enjoying what you learn

i dont think asian parents (mine still dont) will ever understand that soo .. its really up to you to figure out where you're strengths (smartness) lies and pursue that instead of trying to please parents that will never really listen to you anyways

Listen to Mozart.

Just ask your parents if they were getting all A's in school.
If they did not, just point out the fact that it is their genes that are screwing you up now.

just play a tape over and over that has "im a crazy smart nerdy genious" while your sleeping....it helps TRUST ME ITS PROVEN

There are two things that affect your grade in school: intelligence and work ethic.

Intelligence-wise, reading + analyzing books, writing essays, and mathematical problem-solving is all skill-based. No matter how hard one works, a developed/inherent skill in any of these is a major plus in school. It is often worth a C to get a teacher who greatly improves one or more of these skills.

Work ethic is simply studying and memorizing for tests correctly, and doing one's HMWK. In my school, at least, it is very doable to get 95+% on all of your HMWK, you're being lazy (like me) if you don't, and there are a lot of quizzes where one can simply cram and memorize, take the next day and get A's.

What are your weaknesses? If it's skill-based, you might want tutoring or simply to explain your parents that it's not possible. If it's work-based, well, work harder.

It also really helps to have good teachers too.

Reading, writing, and analyzing.

Shazilla is right: for example, I am too involved in my ECs and usually get very little sleep in the school week. I got an 800 on my Math IIC SAT II, yet in my math class, I got an A- 2nd semester because I wasn't getting enough sleep the night before tests. Before the final, I got a lot of sleep - and I aced the thing, whereas kids in my class with grades about 8% higher than mine got about 90% on the final. It's about priorities, and DEFINITELY test taking skills.

you know fhimas you say that like getting an A- is really bad lol

um. if you want to be smart for the sole sake of going into harvard, then you're not going to get smart.
and no, i think smart is something that is "nature" given. but we all have different smartness. For example, I am soo good at remembering people's names and faces and birthdays... i'm smart in the people person kind of way, but not in the SAT math kind of way (680 math), but i did get a 5 on the AP calc B test... weird

bought some herbal supplement you add to tea in eureka, california thats suppose to make you smarter. havent used it yet cause im afraid it has something in it that will cause me to die. theres also that guy on tv that sells "concentration pills" but it seems like a scam. Just tell your parents you've decided to become a business mogul and you arent going to college and if they say anything just point to bill gates.

Oistrakh, if something existed that was guaranteed to make people smarter (enough to get into Harvard, as you say), I s'pose Harvard would have to build a larger campus from overpopulation or rather, just reject a greater number of people and hence make the competition even MORE insane than it already is. And that would SUCK. :(

Hey, maybe academics aren't your strength. Focus on other things. Don't do things because your parents want you do them. Do things because YOU enjoy doing them

and remember academics aren't everything--its going to be more about who YOU are and what YOU can bring to the table in the real world.

Sorry twinkletoes23 - but it's actually all about work ethic (the guy that wrote Freakeconomics came out with a study the demonstrates that people are smart/good at the things they really enjoy). I guess you have a knack for people's birthdays.

Shazilla- At our school, A- = 3.7, A = 4.0 (A+ = 4.3). I'd rather be getting more 4.0 and less 3.7.
