Getting Started

Ok, well I will starting at Davidson College next fall, and im like 99% sure I want to do Pre-Med. So, I have a few questions.

What should I be taking Freshman year? Should I be taking intro Bio, Chem, in addition to Multivar Calc? (Do I need to take Multivar calc? - I will have AB/BC AP Credits going in) Would taking any courses over the summer be a good idea?

Any advice on ECs?

Thanks

I'm a freshman pre-med student and I'm taking introductory biology (1/2), general chemistry (1/2), calc 2, and statistics. As for EC's, I took first semester completely off and spent the time adjusting academically and socially; second semester, when the campus and all of its academics started to feel like home, I got involved in clubs, joined a fraternity, and applied for a research position for next fall.

Whoa, BRM has a fan. jealous

umm...no it looks like we're talking about different "big reds" judging by where he's posted most often.

Shhhh.... if you pretend to have a fan, it'll make you seem cooler. ... in an online forum sort of way.

Since I am finishing as you are starting (graduating from Davidson in 3 weeks and I am starting medical school in July), my advice is to take biology and calculus freshman year, I took physics over the summer at a state university near my home, took chemistry and organic chemistry sophomore and junior years(doubled up one semester)-all those damn humanities requirements eat up a lot of the course load. For EC's I rotated on various clinical services as a sub-intern(on surgery, medicine, pediatrics) during winter and summer breaks at an academc medical center in my home town, did one summer of research at the local medical school in my hometown and spent one summer in Africa doing medical work(Davidson has two such programs). Keep your GPA above a 3.2(although the average successful Davidson premed is between a 3.3-3.4), prepare for the MCAT and your are in!

Thanks hubbell. A couple questions:
- What did you major in?
- Is the grading really THAT hard?... it seems like all I hear about is how hard it is to get good grades
- Is there any other advice you could shoot my way regarding pre-med or davidson in general?

We can talk on PM, but I think your box if full, because I wasn't able to send you one.

Oh, and could you elaborate on the African trip... would you suggest doing it? (and was it the one to Kenya or Zambia?) thanks.

I went to Zambia-quite an interesting place and I would recommend it, every interviewer asked about it and I was able to participate in childbirths and to perform medical procedures that would not be possible in the US. I am a biology major. Grading is difficult and my GPA did limit me a bit in options but I did end up being accepted to 4 schools and they all recognized that Davidson has a rigorous grading system-those schools that didn't know that-did not offer me an interview. I loved Davidson, had a great time, worked hard and played hard and I will miss it. I will be going back to Texas for medical school and I wish you well on your journey through Davidson.
