Getting Stuff There vs. Shipping

Apologies if there are already threads on this, I tried a search and didn't find anything...

D is hoping to study at a university for fall semster in northern Europe/Scandanavia next year. It is an area with a high cost of living, so a fairly expensive place to purchase stuff. What have others done regarding stuff like bedding, towels, lamps, etc. that are typically needed? She will probably be in student housing, so furniture is provided. If you or your kids studied in a fairly expensive country, did they wait and purchase things there? Or ship it ahead of time (if so, any specific suggestions for lowest cost shipping options)? Not sure what airline she will be flying, but we will look carefully at bag fees, it might determine which ticket we purchase.

At the end, did you abandon your stuff/give it away? Or bring/ship it home?

Just trying to get suggestions from those who have been there/done there. By the way, the specific city she is going to is Helsinki, in case that makes a difference in anyone's suggestions.

I packed my life into 2 bags and flew with them–One large roll-y duffle and a carry on size roller. I also used “space bags” to help compact my stuff more inside the bags. I brought some bedding (sheets and towels). My room was furnished so i didn’t bring furniture. I bought a blanket and pillow while I was there.

I ended up leaving a lot of stuff there (all the bedding, even what I brought over, hangers, extra food, and some other stuff). I left stuff in bag, labeled it “free” and put it in the entrance to my dorm and it was gone within 30 minutes! I also ended up shipping a box of stuff back (my school books and some clothes I bought). I shipped from Hong Kong and it took about 2 months for my stuff to get back to the US (I used the cheapest option…a boat).
