Unless something crazy happens, my plans for the fall involve me going to school 12 driving hours away. So naturally, I'm assuming my parents are going to drive me there, help me unpack some stuff... see where I live... and all that. It would also probably make the most sense that we take 1 vehicle.. therefore.. we won't be able to fit a whole lot of anything into the remaining space of our regular sized sedan.

Do most people usually ship a lot of their stuff to meet them there? Do you use UPS? What kinds of stuff did you find to be the best to ship for weight/price, space etc...? How much do you think you spent?

I know UPS can be rather pricey.. it cost nearly 25 bucks to send my friend a 2 person fondu set for Christmas last year so I can only assume how much it would be for a few boxes of stuff

Thanks for the insight :) Planning all those funds ahead of time

Order all your bedding, towels at Bed Bath Beyond online and pick up at store nearest your college. Start saving your coupons now, they don’t expire.
Shop at the nearby Target, Office Max, Marshalls, Costco, Sam’s blah, blah for rest
Take only what you need-think minimalist
You will need to store all this stuff over the summer so…
You need way less than you think
Leave one parent at home for the drop off-more room for your important stuff
Find out if any friends going to same/nearby college-your parents may consider splitting the cost of renting a trailer to haul all the stuff
Shipping stuff is too costly and unreliable

At some point it becomes more cost-efficient to fly. I just took all my clothes with me and the rest I bought here. Doesn’t help that the maximum baggage allowance is 2 bags, 50lbs each.

I have a friend who came from Colorado, so about a 24 hour drive…and she drove all her stuff up with her parents. A lot of it was that she refused to go to school without her car.

Fly to your school. Since most airlines have a maximum of 2 (sometimes even 1) bags per seat purchased and the bags have to weigh less than 50 pounds; pack only your necessities and the items that you will need immediately. The rest you can buy at stores nearby the campus. Also, if there are numerous check-in days, try to arrive as early as possible because it will give you more time to get your other items.

Also see if your school lets you ship items there. My school had a 2 package limit, but I don’t think there was a size limit. So you could order a ton of stuff from Target or something, and have it all be waiting for you there in a huge shipping box.

I probably would fly but I wouldn’t want to go alone so in the end, with the flight only being 2 hours it would be a lot and we have a very gas efficient car which is why that would be the better option. I don’t know anyone going out to school that way or else the Uhaul thing would be pretty genius

My boyfriend lives 30 mins from my school so I was considering shipping a ton of stuff to him to hold for me in the mean time… so if I ordered a ton of stuff online I could probably have it all shipped to his house to hold as well… would that make sense too?

I could buy stuff there but I don’t know how long before move in day that I’d get there and if it was a few days before than my parents would need hotel… and the great thing about having my bf local is he can drive me around to pick up any last minute things but the bulk Id love to have on hand… Like food cleaning supplies most of that stuff I assume I’d get there but the typical bedding… mattress topper… all the good starer stuff… probably best to order online…

the bed bath and beyond coupon thing is awesome. When I found out they dont expire I tacked one 20% an item coupon on the bulletin board. my mom stupidly threw away another one. Doy!

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it, but BBB does a thing where you can “register” for items and go pick them up at the BBB nearest your school when you move. You go around the store with a scanner thing like you’re getting married. Might help in case the online selection isn’t up par, which was definitely what I found with twin XL bedding.

^ thats so good to know thanks!
What if they BBB in the area doesn’t carry that item that you select? will it let you know? or ship the item there?

realize that your dorm room is likely smaller than your bedroom at home…and that you will be sharing it!

You don’t need to bring all that much. We’ve done it 3 times and never had a problem fitting stuff in the car.

Do the BBB thing…order stuff at your local store in June or July, and you pick it up at the store closest to campus. If you order stuff from other stores, have it delivered to campus…schools generally send info on how to do this with housing assignments.
You can buy school supplies at a store near school…Staples, Target, OfficeMax etc.
Same with things like soap and shampoo and snacks for your room.

All you actually need to bring from home are your clothes and some personal items.

^ Yeah the personal items I don’t think Id bring too much of that. Im a major pack rat as it is so I’d definitely have to kick that habit and have things on a serious “want to have it or else ill cry forever” or “need” basis haha.

What I was mostly concerned would be the “new” stuff but the suggestions you guys gave are definitely helpful I really want to plan it all out ASAP because my family and I are HUGE procrastinators. Im talking Christmas Eve NIGHT shopping procrastinators and I’d rather just reduce the stress and start buying things now with each pay check I get and stuff so that when it comes time it won’t be so OMG OMG OMG

I’m my parents only kid going away for school and I’ve never been away for more than 2 weeks so I feel the summer is going to be way more than just a little stressful haha

It’ll be nice to have a plan of how I can get stuff shipped and/or ordered and picked up at a local BBB and then compile a list of what to pick up when I get there :)

With Bed Bath and Beyond, you go in June or July and “register” at your local store…you walk around the store and record the bar codes on the items you want with the little “gun” they give you…they give you a print out of everything you ordered, including the price.

That gives you a chance to go home and decide what items you really want, that fit in your budget. You can go wild choosing a variety of items while you’re in the store, and then be more realistic when you check over your print out at home.

When you get to college, you just go the store there and give them your name and they bring up boxes with everything you selected at home. You can go through the boxes to choose what you want / don’t want. Then you go pay , turning in all of the BB&B coupons you have been collecting. Very easy.

I only brought over trunk full of stuff and bought everything I needed when I got here. It wasn’t much of a problem. Don’t bring that much stuff over!

NO,disregard the expiration date. You can use a 20% off coupon for each item. They will even help you group items to take advantage of the $10 off a $30 purchase. Must have at least 20 of each type of BBBcoupon available in car/house. Get all your family/friends to save them for you. At least one coupon in every Sunday paper now until Christmas. Get on their mailing list and you will get periodic booklets with a coupon on the back page. Before Linen N’ Things went belly up you could even use their coupons at BBB.
