How does it work,
when/where do we get them
How much do they usually cost
Is there any place/website where we can get them a bit cheaper

Tell me all you know about this subject

Thanks Friends

Avoid the bookstore, amazon, half.com, [SlugBooks - College Textbook Price Comparisons](http://www.slugbooks.com/) go a LONG way.

UCI also has those facebook discussion pages where students sell textbooks.

Books can range from $20 - $300 depending on the subject.

[AbeBooks Official Site - New & Used Books, New & Used Textbooks, Rare & Out of Print Books](http://www.abebooks.com)

Some textbooks could be International Edition though (really cheap though).

^, that is a very good buyback site. They always offer the highest prices for my textbooks

but how do we know wat book we’re supposed to get? or when do we know?

Fall books are not available to search for yet - summer session books are still up. But pretty soon you will go to the UCI bookstore site: [Welcome to the UCI Bookstore](http://book.uci.edu/) You click on Coursebooks. The site was recently changed and now after clicking on Coursebooks, you go thru the Zot portal and after logging in it will take you to your registered courses and books that are required for each class.

Your list of books only state the author, title of book and prices for new and used. You can order your books from the UCI bookstore right from this site. However, if you want to check around and look for cheaper books on your own, you have to do a little “gymnastics” to find the correct edition by locating the ISBN #. Once you get the ISBN # , you can do a google search for that number for bookstores that are selling it online and compare prices. I normally just buy through Amazon and find the used books there.

The method that I use to find the ISBN# doesn’t seem to work for everybody, but it works like a charm for me. Here it is: Once you see the list of books required (from UCI coursebooks), you are going to copy and paste the info. Copy all the book info listed (author/title, prices), and then paste it onto a blank email - as if you are writing an email to someone. The ISBN# will show up on the screen inside a box. The ISBN # usually starts with a 978… The funny thing is if you tried to print this email page, the ISBN# won’t print. It only shows up on the screen so you will have to jot down the number to start your search.

Now I know this works for me on Gmail and AOL, but it doesn’t work on yahoo mail. Some people never could get it to work. I think it had to do with their servers or type of computer being used. You can test it now by looking at the coursebooks offered for summer session.

Just another note…books I don’t want to keep, I sell right back through Amazon or Ebay. I actually made $20 from my Psych book on Amazon. It’s much better than than selling it back to the bookstore for the pennies on a dollar they give you.

do you know when the books for the fall will be able to be searched for?

I believe a week before classes begin.

^well that gives you very little time to search around and purchase books doesnt it?

^ yep, they prob do that intentionally, but for me it’s always been enough time. amazon ships normally within a week and i’ve used borders.com (they always have coupons, but not applicable to actual textbooks, novels though they may have cheaper prices) and it turns out just fine too. most professors know a lot of kids don’t have books the first couple days anyways.
what i’ve done in the past when i worried about getting a book late is buy the book from the bookstore (if it doesn’t have wrapping / is returnable) and then return it after i get my book for cheaper - but i think the bookstore has a return policy of 2 weeks from the start of the school year.

sign up for amazon prime ([Amazon Student](http://www.amazon.com/student))

college students get a free year using their .edu account, so for the cheaper books (paperback books, etc), get them on amazon and get them in 2 days. i don’t know about you, but i’d rather spend the same amount of money for a new book than pay for a used one at the uci bookstore (or elsewhere). as for actual textbooks, try ebay & facebook marketplace! :)

For last Fall I checked to see when I ordered books from Amazon, and it was on August 25th, so that’s a full 4 weeks before classes began. So I’d say that the coursebooks should be available to view in about 2 weeks. I remember I got them in plenty of time, both new and from various used book sellers.

^ oh so we’ll know our coursebooks in two weeks??
not a week before uci starts?

I recommend no books.
If you need a book then get an old edition.
I recommend dealoz.com

^ What if the professor assigns homework from the textbook?

Borrow it from the library for 1 day and photocopy all the the homework problems. The text material is usually the same.

^im pretty sure everyone’s gonna have that same idea-you prob wont be able to get a book to copy.

Just keep checking the bookstore site for the coursebooks. I bet they’ll put the list up in a couple of weeks. I started receiving my books last Fall around the first week of Sept. But just remember that some of the private used book sellers on Amazon use “media mail” to ship books and it can be very slow. It helps if they tell you where they are shipping from. It’s best to find a seller that ships closest to where you live and stay away from the international sellers because it can take 3 weeks.

To iTransfer…if you want a good grade, I wouldn’t recommend getting “no books” or using the library copy. It’s possible to get older editions, but for me I need required and complete material at my fingertips. I don’t have time to go through any special gymnastics to find what I need to learn for class.
