Getting that first engineering job...

I graduated in June with a 4 year BMED degree. I came from a decent school, had some projects under my belt, a co-op with a well respected company, and some references that spoke well of me. My GPA was acceptable, hovering right above that magic 3.0. I had both professors and friends revise my resume and circulate it where possible. And for the past months I've been applying to every relevant entry level and internship position I could find.

Yet I rarely get called back and it seems my field is far more cutthroat than I anticipated. The few interviews I've been to were lengthy (always in multiple stages: some phone screenings, then multiple on site) and especially brutal when it came to questioning from other engineers. I must say I am worn out at this point.

In constrast, I found that spending a weekend applying for sales/marketing positions resulted in my phone rining throughout the following Monday. It is not a field I have my heart set on, but at this point one I may have to settle for, at least temporarily.

Just wanted to vent. And I must wonder. Any other grads stuck in a similar position?

Just keep on going and you’ll get there it’s a tough job market but you luckily have a qualification in one of the most in demand fields and from the sounds of it went to a top engineering school. Just be patient and persevere and you’ll get to where you want.

^ ditto on that. I went through those similar struggles. Graduated in June in aerospace engineering and have been applying since I got out…pretty much everyday. Though, I didn’t have any internship/co-op experience so most likely made it harder for me. Just recently, I’m getting calls back and just got closer to landing that first engineering job. Definitely keep grinding and just keep at it. It’ll pay off.
