I know classes at UT fill up quickly - what would an upcoming freshman do to try and get into the classes first? I have heard that UT has more than one orientations during the summer to register for freshman classes - does it help to do the earliest one? When does the course catalog with times and days and everything come out for next year? Thanks.

Good question... I'm wondering the same thing.

I have friends who went to UT this year and they said joining a FIG (freshman interest group) is the best way to obtain your desired classes. I think the earlier you take the initiative, the better. I've been checking on the UT website for information about the courses but I haven't seen any notice about the 06/07 schedules yet.

Freshman don't really have that much trouble getting the classes they want because freshman classes are generally 100+ students and for most some classes 300+ students.

It always helps to do the earliest orientation because then you get to register as soon as registration for freshman begins.

You know what, honestly I've been able to get into most of the classes I've wanted. And yes, it helps to go to the earliest orientation -- but then I've also heard that they only open up xx slots per class per orientation. Simply put, you can use things like classgrabber and pickaprof to meticulously plan your schedule. Sometimes plan a backup schedule. Also you can always hope for the add/drop period, because with that -- people are bound to screw up and not pay their bill, so all their classes will be dropped. then classes will open and you can snatch them up. :)

The only class I've really seen that fills up extremely quickly is like History of Rock And Roll, but I figure since it's a difficult course I'll wait till I get into B-school, that way it doesn't screw with the GPA :)

Also a bit of advice, try to take at least 15 hours a semester. I was foolish and took 13 hours this semester and am now going to be a little screwed. I'm dropping calculus which will put me at 9 hours, a part time student. :(

By the way, don't bother with the course catalogue. use the UTexas registrar website when looking for potential classes, I think it's a lot simpler.

DO you know the link to that website?

http://www.utexas.edu/student/registrar/ only spring is up right now. They havent made the fall class listings yet. Basically what you'll wanna do is when the fall courses are up, you look at what you want and then take a look at the pickaprof reviews make decisions.
