Getting Through School Day With Cold

Hi-

For the last few days I've had a pretty bad cold (fever, sore throat, coughing, fatigue) and I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on getting through a school day while sick. I'm taking some pretty tough classes so I really don't want to miss school if possible.

Bring packs of tissues to stuff in your pencil case or just to put on top of your books. You know, the little ones that can fit in your hand and have a handy peel open dispenser that you can stick back on. Also, make sure they’re a good brand so you don’t look too much like Rudolph. Bring water to class every day if you don’t already and make sure you drink lots of it. I usually get through one bottle a day but when I’m sick I like to have two. Make sure you’re getting enough rest as possible. I find that my colds get better after good night’s rest (which usually is hard to get because of homework and stuff, but at least try.) Hot showers also usually clear my sinuses a bit so try that before a day of school. Then again, I’m a morning shower person. Also, keep yourself focused during class. You don’t want to be there, but not be there, if you know what I mean. Sometimes I find that when I’m sick, I tend to pay less attention even though we’re taking notes. I’ll be copying them down but not thinking about them. I’ve heard peppermint helps with concentration? You could bring in a few minty candies or something. Cough drops would probably stimulate thinking too. :D

^ That, and if your harder classes are all clumped together in some part of the day, you could just go to your important classes, and then leave in the middle of the day after you’ve finished those classes.

@sardony For me, peppermints help clear my throat when I’m sick.

Thank you for your responses, sardony and bigblimp! Any more ideas?

if its really bad, it is necessary to miss class for you and in care of the other healthy students

Don’t go. You’re sick, you need to recover, and the stress from school will only hurt you more. Also, you can make your fellow classmates very sick. That’s not particularly fun either.
If you absolutely won’t listen to my advice, go to the doctor, get a proscription for whatever meds they say, chug water, bring tissues, take cough drops, stay warm. If you find that you’re falling asleep in class, or can’t concentrate from the headaches/coughing/other symptoms, then stay home. Chances are, your teachers will try to make you go to your school nurse, and then (especially if you have a fever) they may be forced to send you home.
Note: I’m taking some pretty tough classes, too. I got sick a couple weeks ago, and missed two days of school. You can recover your lost school with some effort. OTOH, you can’t recover health while going to school.

If you have a fever, I wouldn’t go to school (that’s when it’s contagious). Otherwise make sure you have plenty of tissues. Honey usually helps with my sore throat and a DayQuil wouldn’t be a bad idea.

basically just take a lot of cold medicine until your symptoms go away. You probably wont be that focused, but at least you’ll be there! (well technically anyway)!!

NYQUIL UP! Each night take some nyquil and make SURE you’re getting at least 6.5 hours of sleep when you take it. This will pretty much tie you over during school, though you may want to bring some tea to wake up you when you’re a little tired. Continue taking until you’ve gotten over your cold. ONLY DO THIS AT NIGHT. DO NOT USE DAYQUIL EVER.
