Getting to Amherst

Coming from L.A., how hard is it for students to get back and forth to Amherst? What airport do you fly into and how do you get from the airport to campus?

I’m not from LA, but my guess is you would fly out of LAX to either Boston (2.5 hours away by car) or Hartford (45 mins by car). Shuttles run from both airports on a daily basis, but getting from Boston can be expensive. For breaks, there are free shuttles to bring students to and from Boston Logan.

If I’m not mistaken, there’s also a Bradley shuttle that the school provides as well. The school will only provide ones for Thanksgiving and spring breaks, and I suppose it’d get really expensive over winter and summer especially with everyone’s finals schedules being different. They leave at 11 am and 5 pm on Fridays before break and will pick you up the Sat/Sun before classes for Bradley and only the Sunday before classes for Boston.

Otherwise, you can take the Peter Pan into Boston (~$25-35 one way). If you go on the College Express schedule, it’ll take roughly 2-2.5 hours to get to South Station which you can either stay on Peter Pan to get to Boston Logan (around an extra 10 bucks), and that takes about… 10 minutes? Otherwise, you can take the silver line to the airport, which costs $1.50 but takes 30 minutes. The same prices/times go for when you want to come back.

Or you can pay for a shuttle if you’re coming into/out of Bradley. It’s usually $50-60 per trip, although if you can find a group of students to go with it’ll be slightly cheaper. It’s only about 40 minutes by car, but if you’re coming back from Bradley and there’re other passengers in the car with you (non Amherst), you’re probably going to get dropped off last, and that can take up to 2 hours sometimes. The nice part, however, is that they will drop you off at your door step and help you with your bags.

My son flies back and forth from Amherst to the west coast. Bradley airport (BDL) in Hartford/Springfield is closest. There is a shuttle, Valley Transporter (http://www.valleytransporter.com/</a>), that does pick up/drop offs from the college and the airport.
