Getting to Cornell

Do airports nearby offer bus services to Ithaca? Is Ithaca Airport just way easier to fly in to? Are there lots of buses/trains from NYC? I have been trying to research this on my own but have been having difficulty with times, dates, etc. Could someone tell me the EASIEST and CHEAPEST way to get to Cornell from any NY airport without a car? Thanks so much!

One word: Google.

While there is regular bus service to/from Ithaca from NYC (via Port Authority Bus Terminal), there is no train service. And flying takes nearly as long as the bus and costs 5 times as much. Getting to NYC from Ithaca is easier: look on the ride board and you can usually find someone to carpool with.

yeah getting to cornell is a pain. it takes about five hours from nyc and costs $72 if you’re a student.

I was coming back to school from cornell on sunday and the bus broke down for 2 hours. what a sad day that was.

You shouldn’t be flying into NYC.

Syracuse and Ithaca should be your top 2 choices. The bus from Syracuse takes around 1 hour and costs around $95 roundtrip but Syracuse plane tickets tend to be cheaper. Do the math and make the cheaper/most efficient choice.

^I just booked round trip directly from ithaca to jacksonville, florida with continental to go back in may and return here in august (I flew up on a one way this semester) for $118. Could not believe how cheap it was (it was 198 when I checked last week), and was $228 from newark to jax. What is funny is that my flight from ithaca connects in newark and then goes to jax but round trip was $110 cheaper.

with the arrival of continental express at ithaca’s airports…

the newark-ithaca connection helps you have a truly INTERNATIONAL availability of travel options, cheaper than syracuse too…

BUT because of the size of the ithaca airport and DEMAND/SUPPLY flights booked on days that every other cornell wants to leave ithaca will be impossibly expensive…

ALSO i’m a little *ing scared about traveling from ITH to NEWARK given the horrible flights this year in and out of NEWARK… IS UP WITH NEWARK?!

I hate newark (both the airport and city…lol), but can’t beat the price I paid (160 round trip with all taxes…118 before, plus used grandma’s continental mastercard that allows me 2 checked bags each way for free). Also, continental is definitely better than NW and USair. And the price I paid is for leaving on friday may 15 (last day of exams, but my last final is thursday) and returning 2 days before next semester begins. Book early and should not be a problem.

Thanks everyone! I will be going to Cornell for summer college so like mid june…will this be late enough for ithaca airport to be on the cheaper side? Also, is their easy transportation from ithaca airport to campus? or is it right next to the campus? Sorry if this seems silly but I haven’t been there before and want to ask real cornell students about how they get to Ithaca.

at peak times, like breaks end of semester, I believe there are much cheaper shuttles running to the Syracuse airport, something like $20 or $30. one way obviously.

If you are coming for the whole summer from NYC I would just take the shortline from port authority bus station. It runs many times a day, will end up costing you like 40 bucks one way, and you can bring more stuff with you. And it drops you off right by the dorms. It takes 5-6 hours. Flying will be much much more expensive and although the Ithaca airport is not too far from campus, a cab might be expensive as well, and the tcat bus only runs to the airport at certain times. The only time I felt that it was necessary to fly to/from NYC was for grad school interviews or an emergency. One of my grad school interview flights, which the grad school paid for, ended up costing almost $500 roundtrip from Ithaca to NY!

if you are coming for summer school, do consider flying in/out of Ithaca - since you will be on your own that will be easiest for you,. I assume you are a high school student? or are you doing pre-frosh school as part of your Cornell acceptance? if you are pre-frosh Cornell may make arrangements for you. If you ar ehigh school student you will need to make arrangements. There are cabs that will deliver you to the Cornell campus for about $20 - that is what each of my kids did for summer school.
