getting to, from, and around amherst

ok I have a lot of questions and it would be helpful if you could answer any of them :)

whats the situation with underclassman & cars? are they allowed to have them? what if they are OOS?

how do most freshman get to school? their parents drive them there and drop them off?

if you live 450 miles away, what would be the best way to get there? drive or fly (and which airport should you use… boston or hartford or something?)

once you are on campus how easy is it to get to places around new england? especially boston… and what about places like new york city, montreal, and quebec city?

is it easy to get to northampton/smith college and also springfield, ma?

I am from the area and I can answer 4 and 5.

Once you're on campus getting to Boston is pretty easy. I know there are buses that go from Northampton to Boston and it's about an hour and a half. New york city is about four hours and there are also buses. Montreal and Quebec city and a lot further away but there are also buses.

There are PVTA buses that run regularly between Umass/Amherst and Northampton/Smith. I used to ride these everyday. They are free to students. I think you can also get to Springfield on these buses but I doubt you'll want to do that often.

My Dad's a graduate, and I have applied we live about 90 minutes away.

Question 1. Freshmen can have cars. Most likely you will be parked in a "P" lot far from your dorm on the outskirts of campus. Vandalism can happen in "P" lots.

Question 2. People arrive by car or bus mostly. Airport in Springfield 45 minutes away, CT about the same.

Question 3 If you have your own car drive. As a freshman with all your stuff, I'd still drive, even from far away.

Question 4. Boston is about 1 1/2 to 2 hours away by car depending on time of day and traffic. Buses leave from the Campus Center and go to Boston multiple times per day every day.

Question 5 All the Five college campuses are accessible with or with out cars. Up to 1/2 hour away.

thanks everyone.. if I go there then I should probably get used to buses lol...

New York is only 4 hours away if traffic is atrocious or you drive like a 90 year old lady. It usually takes my family about 3. Hartford Airport is closest, at 45 minutes. On days like, the first day of Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer break, and the beginnings of school, Amherst provides free shuttle transport for students. Boston is about 1.5 - 2 hours away.

I would definitely fly before driving 450 miles, but I despise long car rides.

Also google up Amtrak for train schedules, for example "The Vermonter" route.
Amtrak calls the Amherst station "AMM." It runs to Boston's South Station, or New York City (Penn Station) in 5 hours, New Haven CT and other New England or upstate New York destinations. Look for express routes if you go far, like to Washington, D.C. I think trains are more comfortable than busses...

Catch a ride with someone who lives close to your home and split the gas. It's much cheaper than the bus, and faster.
