Getting to & from Oakland Airport

I just bought my son a ticket to fly home for the weekend, and we were discussing how to get to and from the dorms to Oakland Airport. Can anyone give me the low down on how to get to/from the airport using BART? It's to get on S/W airlines (to L.A.). Is it just BART or BART and a bus?

Thanks in advance!

Take Downtown Berkeley BART to the Oakland Coliseum. Get on the airBART (a shuttle) - about 12 mins to airport, get off at second stop. 45-50 mins in all.

There are also shuttles to Oakland airport that are not very expensive -- check online. It is not very convenient to have to switch from Bart to a bus if you are carrying much luggage.

Last time I took airBART it cost $2. That was over a year ago so it may have gone up. All in all its a relatively easy process.

Basically what Dobby said, though AirBART seems to take a little longer arriving/leaving, so give yourself an hour in all. According to the airport website, it costs $3 and you have to pay in EXACT CHANGE. That's very important as quite a few people didn't have exactly that much money (just $5 bills) and were out of luck.

I use the Bart to get to Oakland airport whenever I fly home to So Cal and the shuttle between the Bart and the airport is convenient to use. Make sure your son prints his boarding pass 24 hrs before the flight so he doesn't have to hassle with it at the airport. If he's not checking luggage he can go straight to the gate. If he's checking luggage, there's a line just for that if he already has a boarding pass. I just bought a 22" suitcase on wheels with an attached backpack for going home from REI Outlet on line. It was less than $70. It is carry on size.
SW is great, 3 round trips and you get a free trip...

Thanks to all who replied. This helps a lot!
