We are from the Midwest, it is easy or difficult to get to and from Furman. I understand you can fly into several cities, including Atlanta. What would the drive be like?

If you fly into atl, the drive from atl to furman isn't too bad, about 3 hrs and it's a pretty simple route.

We have relatives who live in Greenville, and we find it's MUCH easier to fly into Charlotte, North Carolina, and drive the 1.5 hours to Greenville than the 3 hours from Atlanta. You could also fly directly to Greenville/Spartanburg airport, although tickets tend to be more expensive and usually involve a plane change if you fly into there. We have relatives who live in St. Louis and drive down often--it seems like an easy drive, although I'd have to check on how long it takes.

I agree with momdoc that it is far easier to use Charlotte over Atlanta. It’s a shorter drive to Furman, plus traffic isn’t as big an issue as it is in Atlanta. It is definitely worth checking into Greenville/Spartanburg and also Asheville, NC for additional flight options although the prices can be quite high unless purchased far in advance.

If driving to Atl - best times during the week - leave Gville by 9 a.m. get to Atl by 11:30
returning leave Atl by 2:00 and back to Gville by 4:30 - Avoid all the traffic during these hours.

It is so much easier to fly into Greenville/Spartanburg if you can afford it. Charlotte would be my second choice. Atlanta, not in my nightmares. The airport is south of Atlanta. You have to go through all their traffic which can get ugly. Going home on vacations, how would your child get to the airport? Most kids would fly out of GSP. They would get rides with each other.

time from Charlotte to Greenville = 1hr 39min
time from Atlanta airport to Greenville 2hr 29min with no traffic, you can probably add at least 1/2 hr for traffic if not more.

plus, beleive it or not, its probably cheaper from Charlotte

Time to the Greenville/Spartanburg airport from Furman (which you pass on the way to Charlotte): about 30 minutes (airport is east of town, Furman is northwest) From my house, on the eastside (and 10 minutes to GSP), we allow 2 hours to get to Charlotte and park. Sometimes it does cost more to fly from GSP but the differnce is often minor and the time savings great. In 15 years of frequent business related travel, my h has never found it necessary to use Altanta airport and he flies all over the US.

We have friends who’s kids attend colleges in Illinois, Ohio and Tennessee. They always drive. I guess that would depend on how much time you have and how much time you can stand in a car!
