Getting To Know You!

I have about 300something A Cappella pieces on my MP3 player. While I really have my heart set on an a cappella group (the Derbies would be nice... haha. My sister's in "ARRR!" though), being in All State and All Eastern has really turned me on to huge choral pieces. There were 280 voices at All State, and about 40 more at All Eastern, and the sound was amazing. I don't know if you're familiar with the pieces, but I'll post the programs anyway:

All State:
Zadok the Priest (Handel)
Exultate Justi (Viadana)
O Magnum Mysterium (Lauridsen)
See the Chariot at Hand (R.V. Williams)
Ngana (Leek)
I Will Be Earth (G. Walker)
John the Revelator (Caldwell, Ivory)

All Eastern:
Amor Di Mi Alma (agh, I forgot, but I'll edit it in...)
O Magnum Mysterium (Lauridsen)
The Passing of the Year (Jonathan Dove)
John the Revelator (Caldwell, Ivory)

But yeah, my range of interest is VERY eclectic. If you or anyone else reading has sung any of the above, lemme know.

I haven't sung them, actually. But I do like the range of the program. I know what you mean about big choirs - it's truly awe-inspiring. But the problem with big choirs that are not in settings like All-State is that it's so easy for people to get distracted, and that's really frusturating. While it's wonderful to be a part of a large choir for a short time, I think that the all-around rehearsal experience is more gratifying in a smaller group. That goes for plays, too. I love small casts.

So what other schools are you looking at? Do you plan to be a music major?

What have people heard about a cappella at different schools?

Also, let me know if it would be better to start a separate thread to discuss this... Still, it IS getting to know each other!

No, I'm going for Bio. I got into Northwestern and Wash U. I got deferred early from Harvard, so I'm waiting on them, as well as Brown (duh), Yale, and Cornell. I haven't heard from GW (my safety), but now that I have NU and WUStL, it's moot.

And I consider myself an a cappella conniseur (sp?). So many schools in my area have some, but my school is too small to organize one. I've tried. Haha.

Bio? That's a little... different. Yeah, I tried that at my school, too. To no avail. It wasn't my top priority, and there just aren't enough kids with good music skills. Your school scenario sounds quite familiar... I applied EA to Yale, not Harvrd, but also was deferred. And I just got into Northwestern, yesterday. No Washington U - but Kenyon, Macalester, and USC, instead.

As the list starts to boil down, I'm starting to look at details like a cappella...

We have an a capella group at my school, which is very unorganized, b ut when we get our acts together to rehearse, we sound ok. We have a few recordings, but mostly we just go out and sing in the park and sometimes, people throw us money.

I just wanna give my two cents, seeing as I'm involved in a capella at Brown. First off, the Derbies suck. Of course that's my opinion, but they are, for the most part, dicks. A few of them are exceptions to the rule. Madrigals aren't great...If you want to sing classical, do the chorus. I'm willing to field questions on any of the groups specifically, or the a capella scene in general. With that said, the Jabberwocks are the best group on campus.

And Adam, I've sung O Magnum Mysterium...There's this part where the basses drop to low D's...It's sick. And I know Ngana, I believe, unless I'm mistaking it for another song.

I sang amor di mi alma last year. It's beautiful.

I hope it's not too late to join.. lol. I probs won't get in, and won't go to Brown... but w/e I'm bored and hate math problems hehe :)

ohhh congrats crumflake! so i assume ur going to brown yeh?

jnatkins, I'm a Bass II. I was one of the handful of people able to belt out that low D. The sound was kinda lost on the recording, but from where I stood, it sounded amazing. It's one of my favorite parts of the piece. And Ngana, you may know. The only words are "Ngana, ya na, mangana, and leena" and there is a gigantic round at the end between all the parts.

As for Brown A Cappella, I've seen a few perform when I've gone up to visit my sister (Derbies, Ursa Minors, the hebrew one that I've forgotten the name for, and ARRR!, of which my sister is a member). Musically, I enjoyed them. Also, I don't know how the Derbies are NOW, but I loved some of the stuff in their older repertoire (Sort of Haunted House, Romeo and Juliet, etc). But recently, when my sister heard of my acceptance to Brown (oh, I got in, btw... I never posted that... haha), she told me that I should be in Bear Necessities, saying that they're more my personality, and that the Derbies are, for the most part, dicks. Hahahaha. I will still look into a chorus though... if you sing the right pieces, it is absolutley amazing.

And RaboKarabekian, I agree. Haha.

Added to crumflake's post :)
