What is the best way to get to JFK from Cornell? I assume I'll have to take the Shortline bus from Cornell to NYC, but then what? Do I take taxi to get to JFK or is there a better way? Thanks in advance for any help.

Suggest take a taxi, they line up right outside and they will take you to JFK for $45 + tolls. Takes 45 min plus or minus, depending on traffic. Takes you right to your specific departure point.

Other options, if you're on a budget and have lots of time:

bus http://www.nyairportservice.com/manhattan_jfk.html

There's also an "air Train" that sounds a little complicated, and I've never taken

Best option might be check the ride board (or whatever they call it these days), maybe somebody else is driving into Manhattan or someplace else relevant. If you can get dropped at a station of any of the commuter train lines (MTA, LIRR, Path) you can get into NYC easily from there. Then catch a (waiting, probably) cab to JFK.

Looks like JetBlue and Delta have relatively cheap ($100- $150), direct flights from Syracuse to JFK. The US Air flights from Ithaca are unaffordable these days, it seems. (Thanks, Prof. Kahn). Limo from Ithaca to Syracuse airport. this may actually be a competitive way to go.

This looks helpful:

Apparently Cornell has its own bus that leaves directly from campus to 2 stops in Manhattan; can easily take a cab from there. Don't know about restrictions on using it though. There's also Amtrak from Syracuse to Penn Station, then cab.

If you're feeling cheap and have a lot of time, take the A train from Port Authority all the way to Howard Beach and then get on the Air Train to JFK.

Another way is--E train towards Jamaica to Sutphin Blvd (about 40 minute subway trip from Port Authority). You can get the Airtrain right there. I think it's a bit quicker than the A to Howard Beach.
The subways and Airtrain are a bit of a hassle if you have lots of luggage- but if you are traveling light, it really is an ok way to go.
I work near the airtrain and have used it a few times. It's pretty good.
