getting to nyc from cornell

hey so im visiting a friend who goes to nyu over labor day. i've never been to nyc. what is the best way to get there from cornell? is it worth a plane ride? take a bus? are there trains? ive heard has transportation into the city?

any tips/suggestions.

most people take shortline. go to student agency to buy ticket

yea, Shortline is the way I usually take to get to NYC. I think it costs about $90 RT, thought I think it takes up to 6 hours to get to New York I think?
Plan ahead the time.

If you get lucky enough, it’ll take ~4.5 to 5 hours :)

if you have the money, just fly

it costs that much to get to nyc?

I’m 95% sure it was around $90 RT
I remember handing over a $100 bill to the guy and getting RT Tickets.

And check to see if you have classes on Labor Day …

isn’t that kind of pricey for a bus?

I want to say it is $80, but what are your other choices if you don’t have a car at your disposal?

take the campus to campus (c2cbus.com). it’s run by cornell and goes directly from campus to the city. the shortline is crowded and uncomfortable, and doesnt have internet like the campus to campus. there is no reason it should take 6 hours to get to the city, especially when the c2c only takes 3h 45m.

New York City is not exactly close to Ithaca. The two cities are approximately 220 miles apart.

that stops in NJ

But I find it a bit too inefficient for flying from Ithaca to Chicago first, and then from Chicago to JFK (for example).

Yes, sorry.

But you have to pay ~$150(?) for round trip, I heard.

You can transfer bus if you take Shortline.

I believe the Shortline that goes into NYC goes all the way through to Ridgewood, NJ.

exactly. its good if you need to go somewhere in NY or NJ en route to NYC but painful if you just want to get to the city. the campus to campus is more expensive but so worth it - comfy seats, wifi, snacks, and unbelievably good travel time.

the flight from ith to lga is about 45 minutes. so including transport on either side it comes out to around an hour and a half going down, and longer going back to campus because checkin/security at lga takes longer. its not really worth it, especially if there are delays.

From Ithaca, US Airways fly to La Guardia and Continental to Newark.
Both are nonstop flights.

there are direct flights to jfk and la guardia

I guess I haven’t been lucky to find this out :frowning: and still can’t find it on the web

I’d recommend taking the Shortline Bus. Its much cheaper than the other options (about $80 round trip during short breaks OR if you leave on a Friday and return on a Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday during the academic year). Also, since you’re going around a major holiday, the bus will probably run non-stop to NYC and probably take 4.5 hours at the most to arrive. Is Shortline as nice and comfortable as Campus 2 Campus? No. That said, it is simply not worth it to me to spend $150 to go to NYC. Also, its not exactly like you’re sitting on a hard wooden chair on the Shortline Bus. The seats are comfortable enough, especially on the newer buses.

If you’re considering flying in, I encourage you to factor in the additional costs/travel time associated with that. More specifically, you’ll have to leave early to get your flight and may have to take a taxi to airport depending on the time of day/how much you are taking with you. Additionally, it can be a hassle trying to get from LGA to Manhattan, where I assume your friends lives. The easiest way would probably be to take a taxi, which, once again, does not come cheap. If you take the Shortline Bus, you’ll be dropped off in Times Square, only a few subway stops away from where your friend is.
