getting to palo alto

sorry if I sound really ignorant about this, but I just got my packet and I'm trying to book a plane ticket before prices go way up. I tried to research on the airport websites, but didnt find anything useful

so I found that plane fare is a lot cheaper going to SF than to SJ. What's the cheapest way to get from SF to palo alto? (how long does it take)
What are the exact bus/train #/names I have to take?
is it safe to travel to palo alto if my plane arrives at SF at 10:30pm (cheapest), or should I go for an earlier flight?

thanks a bunch!

The cheapest route would definitely be to take BART (it's the San Fran metro train) from SFO to Millbrae (A CalTrain station not far from SFO), totaling $1.50, and then to take CalTrain from Millbrae to Palo Alto (right to Palm Drive), a $4.00 ticket. The total would be a paltry $5.50, much cheaper than Supershuttle or taxi, and it's more environmentally friendly. :) How long it takes depends on if you make the right trains, which you need to look up the schedules beforehand at www.caltrain.com . But usually it will take about an hour and a half to get on campus from SFO, wait times included.

10:30 PM should be okay for travel, especially on CalTrain.

Does Caltrain run that late? Keep in mind it takes a while just to get to Millbrae. I'd advise an earlier flight if it's not too much more expensive.

There's a 12:25 AM train out of Millbrae if need be, but I'm not sure if BART is running then.

hm yeah, bart-->caltrain-->stanford
cept you will have to take a bus into stanford or you have to take a nice walk haha
well if bart isn't running then you should take the supershuttle...it's like $10? per person. i forget but somewhere around there.

it's $26 and then $8 per additional person in your group. i don't remember if you have to be a student though. i don't think so.

Supershuttle has no special student rate. I actually don't recommend Supershuttle from San Jose (SFO is so-so); especially at peak travel times, you may have to wait more than one hour at the airport for the shuttle, even if you made a reservation. San Jose's airport has shuttles on demand; just go to Ground Transportation and ask for a shuttle. They're all $29 to Stanford, but they're even cheaper if you can carpool with other students.

I'm sorry that this didn't answer your question about SFO very well, but perhaps this can still be helpful to people flying into SJC.

By the way, AW check-in will be staffed until 2 AM on Thursday and Friday.

does anyone know the average cab fare from san jose to stanford??also does anyone know where exacttly the stanford guest house is located?

I don't recommend a cab. I did it once and it cost $60. On-demand shuttles are only $29.

These threads have more detailed information. Just wanted to link to them since Admit Weekend is almost here, and I don't know about anyone else, but I'm too lazy to type the various suggestions again ;)
