Getting to South Hadley from Boston

I'm going to be in Boston next week.
I really think this is a perfect time to visit both Mount Holyoke and Smith for overnights.
But I'm going to be alone (without a parent to get a rental car).
There are buses to and from Boston. And in between the colleges.

Does this even sound logical to visit both alone for overnights?
I'm very independent and I have traveled though Belgium and Japan alone, but being alone in the middle of Western Mass is kinda freaking me out!

Any advice would be much appreciated!!!
I really want to get a feel for both colleges!

^ Hey! I’m sort of in the same situation as you. I know that there are buses that run between the colleges, but I’m unsure if this is the right way to go about things. Anyone care to help?

I also posted this on Smith’s CC.
They were really helpful.

Thanks, considering! :)

The Peter Pan (I think) bus goes from Boston straight into South Hadley, and the bus station is directly across from the school. So as far as visiting MHC, you’re golden. The PVTA is a local bus system that will, indeed, take you to Smith. It takes about a half hour to get to Smith from MHC, and it’s totally doable. People do it on a daily basis for classes. Look on the PVTA online for a bus schedule for routes. I know there’s a bus that goes directly from MHC to Smith. Check that out! :)

Isn’t South Hadley the town of that high school in the news this week for students bullying one of their own into suicide?

I think it is the one in the news. The HS is about a mile from MHC downhill. I don’t usually see those HS kids go uphill to MHC, not the MHC girls walk down to the HS area.

Is there any bus directly from MHC to New York or Boston?

Yeah, it’s the same town. But really…the college isn’t associated with the high school in the slightest, other than possibly doing some community service work there. Still freaky for us MHC students, though…

888sale, there is definitely a direct one from MHC to Boston, but for MHC to NYC you might have to transfer. The Amtrak train is actually a better option, unless you’re concerned about cost. I take the train from Springfield to Philadelphia every time I go home on break; it’s about a $35 taxi ride from campus to Springfield. Taking the PVTA bus to UMass campus is also an option (the Amherst Amtrak station is a 5-10 minute walk from the bus stop, VERY easy), but it actually shaves off a full hour-and-a-half on the train ride if you go from Springfield.

Feel free to PM me if you want any more specifics!
