getting two seperate degrees vs a double major

can anyone clear up the difference or which is best for undergrad?

Also, if I wanted to major in management science

Would it be too hard to dual major with m.s. and comp. sci.
or mabe dual major in m.s. and math

or should I just stick to the Major in management sci. and a minor in math

just looking for opinions

thanks

If you didn’t enter MIT prior to Fall of 2007 (current Class of 2011), you can no longer pursue the dual degree option.

As for doubling choices, it really depends on your own capabilities after you’ve taken some classes in your majors. Very generally, though, 15 and 18 should be pretty doable since 18 is light in requirements. 15 and 6 requires some more planning, but it’s definitely not unheard of.

As someone who doubled myself, it’s my opinion that actually completing the double is less valuable than taking the classes necessary to complete the double – it would be just as valuable to complete all the classes and forget to turn in some administrative form, thereby not technically getting the double-major degree at graduation.

You’ll be fine if you show up at MIT with a plan to major in management and figure everything else out as you go. You can’t declare a second major until junior year anyway.

I am a proponent of doubling, but I think it’s most useful if one major is meant to supplement or complement the other. That way, you’re really focusing on one thing, and the classes in one major help you with the classes in the other (instead taking time away).

Some people double in two very different majors. The danger here is that you could end up being average/mediocre in both majors when you could have been excellent in just one. Some people can be excellent in two completely different fields, but it’s much easier to be excellent in two similar fields.

Course 18, due to its flexible requirements, is often a good secondary major that can supplement many primary majors. I’ve heard of people doubling in X and 18, where X is pretty much every course number.
