Getting Worried...

I wish i knew what my safeties are

Your safeties should be UF, UCF, and USF, your reach should be GT, and your super reach should be MIT :D

You really need to get a better score on the SAT because, to be very blunt with you, they suck. If you could just raise your score to 1700/1800 you'd almost definitely get into VT and would have a decent shot at GT. You might have even have troubles getting into the less impressive schools named in this thread as most had an average SAT of 1200 out of 1600 last year.

how about my ACT scores, they are still low. Is it possible to send your application and send you scores at a late date.

Aaerex,

I stumbled upon this thread, and I noticed that someone suggested UCF to you. I remembered something I'd read about robotics at UCF. Here's the link:

http://news.ucf.edu/UCFnews/index?page=article&id=00240041070ca5e3e010b382c8adf0076c4

Your SAT's and ACT's are low. However, I do know that they do a very holistic approach to their acceptances. If you can wow them with your essay and show your inquisitive, creative mind and your passion for robotics, and maybe mention how you've looked into UCF's program and how it seems to be a fit for you ... maybe the lower standardized test scores won't matter so much. I would suggest you also go to the engineering section of UCF web page and review other options for you ... but it appears that if you're interested in robotics there are definitely people there to work with. Good luck!

The other thing I noticed with your stats is that you are 9th in your class with ~3.67 GPA at your school. At my D's school a 3.67 u.w. wouldn't even put you in the top 10 percent; so many do that well. But in your case, in your situation, combine that with your very academic load ... I think they will take that all into context too. You appear to be taking a very rigorous schedule for your school and still staying in the top 10 ... that's pretty good, I'd say. I think they look at so much more than just standardized test grades ... really. You keep doing the best you can ... and working hard. You'll find your fit!

I contacted GT and they say that when you apply the application will not be looked at untill all documented data is sent, which includes ACT/SAT scores. Which would be more benefictial for me to send my application on the normal deadline and take the ACT and SAT on december or just apply early.

Aerex,

Take a look at Clark University in MA. They offer Computer Science and a variety of engineering majors and they do require that you submit test scores with your application but they actually PREFER students who are imperfect!

If he's applying to Ivy League schools, 2000 is considered very mediocre. It will only hurt chances, and he has not even reached the 1500 mark. I took the SATs in middle school with one afternoon of studying and got 2220. They're not very difficult tests; if he's having trouble with them maybe Ivy is not the place for him. Why try to get in when you'll only struggle academically?

So what does ACT/SAT measure, just because I can't score I can't succeed in anything I do. Why am I valued by one tests that I am naturally not good at. The only reason why I think this test exits is another story. However, I take the hardest classes in my school , taking engineering classes and Computer certified schools and you are saying I have no chance to get into any Ivies schools just because I can't pass a test.

i don't think aerex has a 2000, and no a 2000 ISN't mediocre. aerex, unfortunately all schools use some form of standardized testing for admission( or a similar replacement). your SATs knock you out of most Tier IIs, let alone Tier Is...much lower than the "top 40" posters are saying. try for ACTs.

sorry...i just saw you DID take the ACTs. what about NJIT?

NJIT. Hmm i don't know about that college. It is not completly true that all schools use SAT/ACTS for admission, I mean WPI uses a optional way where you can send in a project as a replacement for scores. I don't understand why no other does this.

Don't get hung up on Ivies, especially if it seems they are looking for something you don't feel good at. Look for schools that value what you feel value your strengths.

Aerex,

The SATs/ACTs are objective measurements of your capacity for reasoning, which is clearly why all competitive schools require them and why you stand little chance. Don't fight city hall: Apply to schools within your reach and perhaps go for one super reach, don't delude yourself and try to impress beyond your abilities.

I can understand that SATs/ACTs are used to measure your ability to succeed, but it totally ridiculous to say that to suceed in college is by how much you reason or by how welll you take this one test. I guess it is a bit stupid to believe that I have no limits.

Anyway, I am not striving to go to ivies like Brown but I really want to go to GT but the only thing that is hindering me from getting accepted.

To be unaware of your own limitations is foolish. Your scores correlate very highly with how you will do in college; it's statistically proven and the reason why nearly every school accepts these tests. That said, apply to GT and retake your tests after investing serious time and effort.

Aerex, how hard are you preparing for the SATs? A lot of people (especially on CC) may tell you it's nearly impossible for you to boost scores on a third try, but I personally believe that it's possible with a lot of hard work and preparation. For example, if you do decide to re-take, practice for about 4-6 weeks in advance, taking one section of one practice test each day. That is only about 30 min/day, and I can say from personal experience and the experiences of friends that doing lots of practice truly does work in boosting your score.

Take my advice as you will, and good luck in your apps process, wherever you decide to apply

i suggest getting ur sat scores up, UF's middle 50% sat scores is 1210-1400. also i dont think ur weighted gpa is 5.3, considering the number of aps you took id say the colleges would weigh it around 3.9-4.0. But affirmative action is on your side.

Aerex~ NJIT= NJ Institute of Technology..very math ,engineering

Yeah I practice for the SAT and ACT for three months straight and my scores did not improve from previous tests.

@wayward_trojan: Yes I am fully aware of my limitations but I don't accept them. I believe that everyone has the ability to surpass them one way or another. I don't know if it is true that the SAT statistically proves how well you can succeed in college. I mean what is the point of going to school anyway when you just take the SAT and just go to college.

@happycollegemom: I appreciate it, I will put that on my lists of colleges
