Getting your books

So I am trying to find my needed books for Chem 1a and Math 1a from the Cal student bookstore site, and there is a bunch of stuff, especially for chem.
What exactly is the following:

OWL ACCESS CARD (EBOOK FOR CHEMISTRY: THE MOLECULAR SCIENCE)

CHEMISTRY PKG (PERSONALIZED OWL&GUIDE)

-I can find the chemistry book on a third party site but I dont know about this personalized owl and access card (you know I didn't sign up at Hogwartz). Does this mean that I can only buy these things from Cal and not a third party?

OWL is an independent online site to which you receive an access card, either with a textbook or separately. You can buy it from the site directly.

Owl | Online Web-Based Learning

Look under General chemistry, find the Moore et al book Third Edition ebook version of the text used in the class, and then select UCB.

On the home page above is a way to buy an access card yourself, or you can buy it through the various bookstores we use.

For Math 1A, I wouldn't buy the book just yet, they use a customized Berkeley edition and they're coming out with a new one for this semester I think (which is why the school wasn't buying them back in May)

^^ yeah the required math 1a book is Essential Calculus (custom 1a/1b)

I'm also taking Math 1A. Cheeks, when do you think we should buy our Math 1A books? Should I buy the additional recommended book?

I'd wait until August sometime to buy it. Definitely from the school, maybe from Ned's... Ned's was buying back the old one in May so I'm guessing they're going to try to sell it or else they'll lose a lot of money.

I don't know about any other additional recommended books? It's definitely useful to have a solution guide or find someone with one for those tough problems.

so which books do we need for chem 1a, i'm still really confused about the required materials. what can i buy from an outside site?

also, if i don't want the ebook can i just get the hardcopy or do i have to buy the ebook

$$$$$$$

the ebook comes with OWL access card which is necessary for the course.

How important is it to get the "extra" stuff that sometimes comes with books? For instance, I'm taking Astronomy C10 and the book is the 3rd edition of Cosmos. Amazon has it listed along with "AceAstronomy, Virtual Astronomy Labs Printed Access Card" for $134. Do I need that Access Card, whatever it is? The book is less than half the price on half.com, but I don't know if all of the books sold there come with "extras."

Thanks.

My high school had this thing called a Trojan Access Card. All it did was make cutting in line legal...

thats awesome! I wish my school had VIP cards to cut lines

i buy international books on ebay for example eBay Store - New and Used College Textbooks: cheap textbook, economics brue, principles of corporate finance

i check with them whether it comes with cd or access code or not before buying them. if they dont i might consider getting them separately if i need them.

man..i still don't get it

for chem 1a, would you guys advise just getting the OWL package and books from the berkeley bookstore?

i found the chem 1a book called chemistry:the molecular science by moore edition 3 for really cheap on other sites but i don't know what other stuff i'm supposed to get. =[

ahhhh
im soo confused too

can someone who took chem 1a last year just give us a list of all the materials we actually need? including any study help products u used that helped

could u also tell us the editions if that is at all possible

thanks

Just wanna piggyback on the past two chem 1a posts

Should we buy from the bookstore since they have all these weird personalized stuff?? The bookstore has the stuff in 3 divisions which confuses things even more

Or should we just get the essentials (iclicker, the main book, the harry potter owl, and the ebook) please correct this list if wrong cuz I did this on the fly

Just buy stuff that is "required" forget about anything "recommended" or "suggested". They ASUC & student store just wants to make more $$$ by offering extras you'll never use or need.

Adding to your list of essentials don't forget about the Lab manual, lab notebook, and calculator (if you already have a non-graphing one you can use that instead of buying).

For cheaper goods/books also check thru Ned's (right across Bancroft from the student store. Welcome | Ned's - Berkeley

How about Math 1A? Is the recommended textbook (not custom Berkeley edition) necessary?

I can't find the recommended textbook you're referring to... do you mean the SSM (student solutions manual)?

Once again it's listed as "recommended" not "required" so that should answer your question.

Actually, I think I might get the SSM, so I could check my work.
