Also, buy the lab notebook that comes with the package. It's specifically designed for the chem lab course; comes with carbon-copy paper so that you can do you work in the notebook, turn it in at the end of the period, and still have your notes with you so that you can write up your lab.

And Chem1A isn't really a weeder. It's not that hard. O-chem is the definitive weeder. It is tough as balls. Balls, I say. BALLS!

No Calculators for Math 1A and 1B? What if you need to figure out the volume of a bounded function through the disk or washer method (integration)?

What if an answer can't be found without a calculator?

There will be no answer that cannot be found without a calculator. The point is to teach you how to think about calculus and how to do it with your BRAIN, not how to input certain commands into the little machine so it can spit out a nice answer.

My AP Cal teacher emphasized technology, but I always knew how to do equations by hand.

I was just wondering if the Math 1A and 1B instructors give out unreasonable problems, such as equations with answers going to 10-15 decimal places.

Again, not the point of calculus. The good instructors, come exam time, do everything by variables instead of numbers. It's annoying, but it's really the best way of understanding calculus because it eliminates simple calculation and boils calculus down to its foundations. Anybody can add, subtract, divide, and multiply - that's elementary school stuff.

It's the lazy instructors who just like to throw numbers into the problems and take off points if your answer is wrong because it's the easiest way to check answers. And those are the bad teachers. But chances are, you won't encounter that here.

This is Berkeley, son. We do a little something called "educating."

Prepare to be f***ed by the long dick of the school. (Er...law.)

There is the CHEMISTRY PKG (PERSONALIZED OWL&GUIDE) about $220 and then there is the OWL ACCESS CARD (EBOOK FOR CHEMISTRY: THE MOLECULAR SCIENCE) about $112

The first one is listed as required while the second one is listed as recommended. Do they both contain the ebook? If so whats the difference between the $220 one and the $112 one? whats the point of buying the hardcopy when OWL comes with the book regardless?
Thanks

The 220 one has the hardcopy book as well. the 112 does not have hardcopy. if you can read ebook fine, buy the 112 one. if you buy the 220 one, you don't need the 112 one.

what disadvantages are there in only using an ebook?
Also can the OWL card be bought from a third party or can it only be bought at the book store and neds?

Is it better to go with the book of the higher edition? The department site shows book of a lesser edition in comparison to the one in the bookstore.

For Chem 1A, does the class cover every chapter of the book? There are some books for sale with only chapter 1-12 which are a lot cheaper to purchase.

1) Where do you buy the chem 1a lab manual?
2) Is it completely unnecessary to buy the SSM for math 1a and chem 1a? Or can it be helpful?
3) Does the "CHEMISTRY PKG (PERSONALIZED OWL&GUIDE)" only include OWL and the textbook?

^^ I believe your answers are in the previous pages of this thread, lemme try to help

1) the Cal book store and nedsbooks.com has them
2) it can be helpful but the textbook already gives the answers to the odds probs
3)owl, textbook, and the ebook

so nedsbooks.com is the best place to buy all our materials? what about ebay and other outside sources? and which do students most prefer, the CHEMISTRY PKG (PERSONALIZED OWL&GUIDE) or the OWL ACCESS CARD (EBOOK FOR CHEMISTRY: THE MOLECULAR SCIENCE)? and for math 1a, does the edition of the textbook matter?
