Getting Your Stuff to College?

How is everyone planning on moving all of their stuff to college? I'm going to be moving from Texas to California so I can't exactly bring that much with me onto the plane. Shipping is only feasible up to a certain point because of the cost, so what does everyone recommend? (Although I may be overimagining the amount of stuff one needs to bring.) Thanks!

I don't know if this would be an option in terms of convienence or anything, but I'd take the Amtrak Auto Train.

Here's how it works. Load up your car with all your stuff. They load it onto a train. You get to travel wherever on the train while your car goes with you. When you get there, you get your car back. I've taken this several times to Florida and it's been great.

I think that driving a uhaul may be in order if you bought/have large things like lofts, futons, bookshelves, etc. Though it is a fairly long drive, it is the sheapest way to do it that I know of.

if only my mother would consent to drive a uhaul to st. louis from LA... then i could have a harp AND a bicycle.

If you're flying, just try to load up everything you can into your suitcases. If your parents are coming to drop you off, most airlines allow three suitcases per person so your parents could definitely bring on any extra suitcases you might have. Also, it is generally easy to ship items through the mail. I shipped one of my favorite lamps from California to New Hampshire and it was no problem.

However, I doubt you will really have many large items to ship unless you have some kind of large musical instrument or something. Most dorms come pre-furnished with a bed, desk, and bookcase so you will not need to ship these big items from home. I bet uhaul is pretty expensive and I don't think this is a very good idea. If you want a futon or an extra lamp or two, just buy it when you get to your college. Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, and other stores all sell this stuff (my roommate bought our futon from a Walmart in rural New Hampshire so I'm sure you will be able to find stuff).

Good luck!

Now that I think about it more, if you have a big truck or someone that really trusts you/ your parents has one, you can just borrow that. I know that s what i am doing but then again I am not going tat far away from home but I am bringing a ton of stuff.

My college move is a little bit easier. I originally would have been moving from Central Florida to Knoxville, TN. However, with the fact that my family wanted to move to TN before I was even accepted to UT, I've just made the difficult move from FL to Tennessee.

Now, I just have to pack up the stuff I want to take to school with me, load it in the car and I'm all set. Now I'm only moving a little over an hour away from 'home' and I'm not bringing anything big.

or if you need stuff that you havn't already purchased, or would be cheaper to purchase out there than to ship, buy it online and have it shipped to your school or get it out there.

Buy as much as possible at a Wal Mart near your college. Ship/carry the rest.

yay i too am moving from texas to california. i'm going to drive there, it seems like it will be easier then trying to load all my stuff in a plane and worrying about things getting lost from shipping.

I'm going to LA from Oklahoma and I'm just loading everything on the car trunk then shipping it. I need the car and I need to carry all my crap... so.. But its expensive, like 800 dollars.

I can't drive over there bceause i'll be out of the country during summer and i'm going to california straight from the foreign country.

Mac & Cheese, I'm just just curious, but which college are you attending?
