ever look at the school newspaper? They have a section where they list the weeks criminal activity, much of which we don’t get in the email.

Ilyasaber14 is correct. They do report criminal activity in The Ram, which I read regularly by the way. On campus problems occur on all campuses - kids leaving their backpacks unattended & their cell phones go missing, or rooms unlocked & a lap top goes missing. There are absolutely no muggings on campus at Rose Hill. It’s a beautiful, very safe campus & security does a great job taking care of and responding to the students. Since September, I have read about several problems with students being assaulted/groped/robbed off campus - I believe these are usually late at night coming home from parties/bars, and often the kids are walking in groups. The college kids stand out like a sore thumb for anyone who wants to cause trouble. This crime happens in any city, but people would be naive to believe that it doesn’t happen off campus at Fordham. I grew up in the Bronx, I would not recommend my kids walk around off campus late at night. That is just my opinion.

Ilyasaber is most definitely right. Some weeks are quieter than others, though it’s definitely not out of the question to see an off-campus incident of some sort every wk.

My friend got mugged fresh. yr. and his arm was broken. He had to wear a sling for 6 wks. You just really have to be street smart/have basic common sense. If you have neither, Fordham really isn’t a school for you.

How can that be correct when the report is this:

“The stats DO NOT support your opinion.”

I’m not sure if you’re referring to me and I’m not sure where you got these numbers from, but this is not an opinion: Since September 2007, The Fordham Ram has reported numerous off campus problems: students getting punched in the face, girls getting groped by strangers, students getting mugged (and perhaps Security does not use the word “mugged” to describe these incidents). A student was recently hit by a car on Fordham Road, and hospitalized (thank goodness all is fine) and I have personally seen one of the security e-mails that was recently sent warning students to be aware of a recent mugging/assault - that was probably 2 months ago. I checked, but The Ram does not seem to have PDF copies on line. This security information is a regular section in The Ram found on the bottom of page 3. It is usually one of the first things I read and I have been reading The Ram regularly for years. I’m going to guess that most resident students do not tell their parents about the security e-mails or issues so that they are not worried. I would also guess that the off campus security issues that I am reading about in The Ram do not fall under the definitions of these stats that are posted - kids getting punched, threatened & groped.

I love Fordham, I grew up in the Bronx, have a Fordham sticker on my car and I’m in the Bronx frequently. The information I post is 100% factual and can easily be checked. This is not hearsay or an opinion, this is information reported by The Ram. My d is an accepted student for 2008, but I do not want her walking around Fordham Road area after dark. You didn’t do it 30 years ago and you don’t do it today. I would recommend Fordham to anyone, it’s a beautiful safe campus, but all schools have security issues on and off campus, inluding this one, and people should not be blind to that fact. It’s all about using common sense and being streetwise.

I didnt say there werent any incidents and I never said that I recommended walking alone at night on Fordham Road or even Little Italy. You misread my comments, which werent directed at you.

What I said was that someone who makes irresponsible comments about “2 or 3 incidents a week” suggesting that Fordham is an unsafe campus, and making that statement out of context is sending the wrong message to incoming students and families and prospective students. The fact that security emails are sent out is a SERVICE provided by Fordham Security to prevent harm. The comments you state occurred off campus. But the stats that Fordham provided to OPE indicate it is no more dangerous and in many cases MUCH LESS dangerous than some famous schools. The number of incidents at NYU, Columbia in New York, at at Duke are far greater than the number reported at Fordham. I also happen to know that the number of incidents at UVa is far greater than those reported at Fordham. The point is to keep it in context. The Bronx is like any other borough in greater NYC: one must be careful and travel in groups. Even TOURISTS on Lexington Avenue and Rockefeller Center must be very careful.

You are correct, Fordham’s campus is safe and gorgeous. My kid does NOT venture off campus at night without a large group of friends, and then only to Little Italy or on the Metro North into the city.

A girl was raped and murdered on PARENTS WEEKEND a few years ago at Dartmouth while her parents were there. She had been out drinking with friends and left a bar alone.

The same risks are there at Stanford, UCLA, USC, UT-Austin…on and on. Certainly at U Chicago, WashU-St Louis.

I dont want to say that Fordham is a perfectly safe place and misrepresent the risk. But neither do I want to paint a morbid and scary picture of kids in fear and parents in a constant state of paranoia. That simply is not the truth.

Whatever the Ram publishes is for the safety of students and is a service of the security division. Many schools provide that same service to keep students aware of risks.

Your D will be perfectly safe no doubt because you have advised her properly and she will make lots of friends at Fordham who stick together when going off campus.

Most of the bad behavior you report has to do with kids going into bars on Fordham Road and drinking too much, stumbling out the door and having problems late at night. But similar problems occur at many major colleges around the country, often when and where drinking occurs.

It happens at BC, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Holy Cross. Check the stats.

For example: Georgetown reported 18 forcible sex offenses ON CAMPUS. Fordham had 2 in 04 and NONE last year at all.

Thanks seafoodlover. I wasn’t referring or interpreting any of your comments in my post, so no misunderstanding of your comments. I do feel, however, that the other student is not making “irresponsible” statements. I don’t know if “2 or 3” is an accurate number, but it is definitely happening. Incidents do occur off campus that do not fit in the definitions of “aggravated assault” or “robbery” or “sex offenses” and I can only assume are not be reported as such in this OPE report, but are being reported in The Ram.

I’d be curious to learn what area of the country you are from. People who grew up in the Bronx know a bit more about what is going on in the local neighborhoods.

It doesn’t matter to me what the crime stats are for other colleges when my kid is on the Fordham campus, so I honestly don’t see the point in the comparisons. We know crime occurs at all campuses, but let’s not wear shaded glasses when crime is discussed about the Fordham area.

Also, just an FYI, but the reports being quoted also include:

The crime data reported by the institutions have not been subjected to independent verification by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, the Department cannot vouch for the accuracy of the data reported here.

The reports that Swansong listed above about the various colleges are speculative and should no way be thought of as the truth. I mean, look up a few colleges in the small towns in the middle of nowhere and you’ll see what I mean; many of them reported more off-campus offenses than Fordham. Something clearly seems fishy.

That said, let me assure you that Duke is a VERY safe campus. We have a 24 hour police patrol. Duke provides rides to and from campus locations after 5p.m. The University even provides two walking escorts for students after dark if they want one.

My point is that Fordham is as safe as other campuses and the area outside the campus is not as bad as some suggest, but also not much different than some areas around other schools. To be certain, its not safe to walk alone anytime and not safe to go anywhere at night alone.

I am not from the Northeast or New York or the Bronx. But I have lived in northern New Jersey and travelled into the city by train and subway DAILY during one tenure of my life when I was in graduate school.

My postings about other schools was not meant to slime anyone, but only to point out the facts as best they can be discerned. Fordham is at least as safe as Duke and Vanderbilt. Both Duke and Vanderbilt also have VERY sketchy areas outside the campus gates. Fordham has the same security measures they do.

Campus security, particularly for females, is a paramount interest to students and parents. Security outside the campus is also a big interest. Believe me, I am no pollyanna. I want all students and parents at Fordham to feel safe, but also to know what the real picture is. I just don’t want people suggesting that Fordham is unsafe and that it has a problem that other schools do not experience, because that is simply not the case. When people from say, California, read this thread they may wonder, based upon some mythic notion of “the Bronx”. But when you point out the risks at UCSD, UCLA, USC, Stanford, even idyllic UC-Irvine in Orange County, they realize that security is a risk everywhere and you must always be responsible and never take unreasonable risks like walking alone at night.

The kids at Fordham for the most part fully understand this and also understand that the role of alcohol plays in their security risks. Most of them go out in large groups of 5 or more, most do not stumble out of bars on Fordham Road late at night and alone.

And finally, I have to wonder why Skater Girl is posting all the time on Fordham’s thread if she is at Duke. What is up with that? Hmmm? and I am seafoodlover, by the way.

Well, I will agree with you 100%, Fordham is an extremely safe campus. No one should have any worries about their kids walking on campus whether it 3:00 in the afternoon or 3:00 in the morning. The university does a great job taking care of the kids and the Ram Van is a great resource for anyone who wants to go off campus into the city. One other thing I haven’t seen mentioned here. I note a lot of kids like to go into Manhattan, but another great alternative is taking Metro North north to White Plains. White Plains is a 10 minute ride from Fordham, a beautiful little city with great malls, restaurants, a great movie theater at the City Center, and night life for the younger crowd. White Plains has had a revival so to speak in the past 10 years and it’s a great place for families & college kids alike. Very, very pretty at Christmas-time & last night they had their own New Year’s ball drop.

really? man, i wuld have loved to go see the ball drop in White Plains.
I agree, white plains is having a revival, and its starting to look like a reallly beautiful city.

yeah, white plains is really nice. I live in new rochelle-- I just wish new ro would see some sort of revival like White Plains. A lot of my friends who not from the New York area think new ro is the “greatest thing” b/c of New Roc City, but to be honest, that’s all new rochelle really has to offer. White Plains is a great alternative to Manhattan

i’m sorry but the first reply to this topic is hilarious XD.

hooray for stuck-up liberals lawl

i am currently a freshman at the rose hill campus, and while i’ll admit that certain areas of the bronx are dodgy, i have never felt that i was in danger in the immediate area around campus or on arthur avenue. i don’t have a problem walking up fordham rd to the subway by myself and i am a girl. as long as you don’t flash your designer purse while wearing your fordham sweatshirt, you will be fine. be smart. go out in groups at night and don’t wander down the side streets by yourself at 3 am.
