GI bill not accepted outside home state?

Hello all,

So i have been active duty 6 years now with 2 years left on my contract. its been a long road, with a lot of bumps and deployments to it. so, im ready to go back to the real world. now my Goal; i want to study patroleum engineering, the problem my home state is california and well the only school that offers this degree is USC. im not saying im dumb, but there are many more options out there that are actually reachable. IE; Texas A&M, and University of alasaka which i know if i applied to right now id get into but they are both state colleges. I know about the yellow ribbon program but, what are my other options? per say alaska? Should i pay off the first year, apply for residencey then use my GI bill? if there is anyone that can help me with this or have been in this situation your advice is much appreciated. thank you.

(Sorry i put this in the Veteran section but nobody seems to be there)

Should i pay off the first year, apply for residencey then use my GI bill

You’d need to see what their req’ts are for residency. Many states will not grant residency to students who move there for education purposes…otherwise no one would pay OOS costs after the first year.

Also, do you know that you don’t have to major in PetE to work in that industry? That industry also hires ChemE majors…and many more schools offer that.

You should google a college name and residency to find out how veterans are treated for residency. For instance this is from Alaska Anchorage: [Alaska Residency](<a href=“Apply to UAA | Admissions | University of Alaska Anchorage”>Apply to UAA | Admissions | University of Alaska Anchorage). It looks like you would pay in-state rates there from the start. It looks like you would NOT be considered a TX resident at A&M: [Registrar: Residency Guidelines](http://registrar.tamu.edu/general/resguide.aspx).
