GI Bill + Scholarship + Out-of-state Tuition?

Hi:

I received Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits transferred to me from my father. Presently I attend a public university and pay out-of-state tuition. I receive a scholarship that is awarded to out-of-state students to be applied toward tuition ($2000 per semester), and have 2 more semesters of 100% GI Bill benefits remaining.

My question is: will I be able to use the tuition-only scholarship and the GI Bill tuition benefit? The benefits do not even come close to paying the tuition in full: my bill for next semester will be ~$12K, where GI Bill pays ~$4K and scholarship pays $2K. I'm still awaiting a clarification but the school's VA office said something to the effect that I wouldn't be able to. It would be understandable if the benefits covered the tuition in full, which was the case at my previous institution where I did pay in-state tuition. But in this case, they do not 'overlap' in such a way.

Thanks all!

It really just depends on the school - you’ll have to wait for clarification from them, since this is a matter of university policy wrt to the scholarship. Some schools would let you “stack” the scholarships towards tuition and others wouldn’t.

The VA is the last payer, so you may very well not get more than the GI Bill amount, even with the scholarship. They pay up to a certain amount per state and if the school deducts your scholarship from that amount, you will only get the difference. I’m not sure if there is legally a way the school can post the scholarship after certifying your enrollment with the VA.
