Giant Goof, Wifey accepts Federal Loan in her name!

So Wifey and Son say they are going to clear up some to-dos, including accepting the complete financial aid PKG. This includes the 2 small Federal loans, 1 w/ subsidized interest and the other not. Anyway, I walk away to do Sunday errands like water the grass and mail bills, he walks away, and she proceeds to apply for the loans in her name using her SS#. I swear to G*d I'm going to pull my hair out. I get a bad bloody nose and sit for 30min on the front stoop trying to stop it and lower my blood pressure and then she says she's gonna take off for a couple days to visit friends and there's no big deal - she sent someone an email. Hopefully she will actually call ppl today and expunge her mistake and the 2 of them will correct this and get these 2 loans taken care of. Today.

Has anyone else made this mistake?

No; however, I don’t think her acceptances are going anywhere. Ask your son to accept the loans.

I don’t think you have much to worry about. Your wife’s application cannot be processed because SHE is not a college student.

Have your SON do the loans!

Did she apply for Plus?

She says she cleared it up. Her mistake did not go through. Waiting for a new PIN in my son’s name. Then she can do the loans in my son’s name. We’re talking about the “Direct Stafford Loan” 1/2 has subsidized interest. She says it is actually just 1 loan even though the interest is subsidized on half. I thought it was 2 separate loans … for the 1st year these are the only loans we’ll (he’ll) need.

A NEW Pin for your son? Why would you need a new one? You use the same PIN that your son used to sign his FAFSA.

And my opinion…your son should be completing these documents. Certainly, you or your wife can assist him…but his PIN is HIS signature on the forms.

hmmm, yeah she said “her” PIN was the one she used for our FAFSA … she said she talked to someone … hmmm, then proceeded to criticize me for checking up on her. they were working on it together when I left them to it, when I got back the deed was done. and now has to be redone when the new PIN arrives by email …

So your role is head tongue clucker, finger wagger and bloody nose drama queen? Unless you are helping, it sounds like you need to get out of the way.

When your son completed a FAFSA TWO PIN numbers were required. One was for your son. The second was for a parent (either parent can get a PIN to sign that THEIR financial info is accurately reported).

When your son completes the Master Promissory Note for his Direct Loan, he uses HIS pin only. Your wife’s PIN is not used at all for that.

Your son should already HAVE a PIN from completing his FAFSA. Where is that PIN?

OK, thanks I’ll pass that on!
