Best Buy has a great new program. Basically, your child can register with them (think wedding registry). People can pay into their account…think of it as a Gift card. Kids love it (especially boys since they can buy games with the card), but at the same time they can use it for a camera or a printer or DVDs.

It allows the child freedom. Some parents may not be able to gift a kindle or a camera or even the ink cartridges. Some parents can and this allows the child the ability to buy an X-box game or DVD, maybe even a new TV or DVD player…show me a kid that doesn’t go with at least a TV, Camera, DVD or gaming system and I will be shocked.

The other suggestion I would offer is to buy “silly/unique” gift cards. For example Mc Donalds, Arby’s have gift cards if the campus has them on site, it is a nice freebie, just have them write a note that they know it is on campus and thought they would enjoy it. Bed, Bath and Beyond because every kid even guys like the little things they have, i.e. the ipod pillow (this is a temper pedic foam pillow) or prints to decorate the room. Lastly, a gift card to Sports Authority (or anything sim) if they are going IS. They can get great sweatshirts or room decor.

My gift that I now give for non-family friends…a ROLL OF QUARTERS for laundry and a mix of 4 cards:

AND lottery tickets in the amount of their graduation yr…this yr 10 will be the number. I do everything for the yr…i.e. this yr 10 dollars in quarters, 10 in McDs. 10 in BBB, 10 in Visa and 10 in lottery. Next yr it will be all 11’s.

I suggested the quilt idea to my mother-in-law today and she loved the idea. I think she is going to do something with my son’s high school colors and the Carolina Blue of UNC.
