What have other people sent as thank-you gifts to teachers who wrote recommendations? I'm looking for ideas - male, recently retired teacher

I knew someone from 2 years ago who gave a just-retired teacher a set of golf clubs... very costly but that teacher was his mentor of sorts and he got into Stanford.

A friend's friend's teacher was male, was a part-time,semi-retired teacher (laugh), and anyway, she made him a bag of cookies. I'm unsure whether this was appropriate, but they were close (in class teacher and was an activity supervisor), and he did have a sweet tooth...

Most people at my school last year gave thank you cards only, though.

Doesnt really matter, teacher will appreciate despite what you give him/her. Best if it is something you personally made though.

Nothing big, unless you know them really well. I'm just going to send a thank-you because even though they know me well enough to write recs, it would be akward and weird to give anything more.

Yeah. I commented on this on another thread, but I'm close enough to some teachers that I share some of my food/snacks with them or even give them my entire pack of Bake Rolls.

I think, a few days after sending them a thank-you card for recommending and teaching me, I'd feel more comfortable tossing them a Snicker bar, flashing a smile and saying "Thanks". :D

The best gift you can give them is by getting into a good college lol.

Once I get into college, I'm going to give them each a thank-you and a box of nice chocolates. Can't really go wrong with expensive candy.

Yeah, a box of chocolates is what I was thinking. Can those be sent through the mail?

Uh, I guess so. I'm sure Godiva or a similar company delivers through their website. You are risking the crush-factor, though, and hand-delivering is always more personal.

i gave them a box of godiva. one of my teachers was thrilled.

two words: gift card
Teachers especially like gift cards to bookstores (if they're intellectual) ro for any male I think one from Best Buy or a sports goods store would work quite well.

A nice, meaningful handwritten thank you note is the best present you can ever give a teacher. Teachers have a lot invested in their students and to know that it's appreciated is a gift. I save all the cards and notes that my students send me. If you feel like you must buy something, I highly recommend a gift card or movie passes. The suggestion of a gift card to a book store was a great one.

One of my S's teachers has an instruction sheet for recommendations. At the end he suggests an XXL T-shirt from the accepting school! He has a great sense of humor. But I also like the gift card idea. My neighbor threw an open house for everyone who helped his D when she got ED to Harvard a couple of years ago.

That reminds me of something Marilyn. My father is a college professor and frequently writes recs for applicants to grad schools. That's his deal too. When asked what they can do in return, he tells them he wants a t-shirt or sweatshirt of the school when they are accepted. I suppose it becomes like a collection of his students' successes.

How much would you suggest giving if you give a gift card? I don't really know what amount would be appropriate.

So far, I have given anwhere from 10-20 dollars on the gift cards, depending on the teacher and how much money I have on hand...

I wonder how many shirts the teachers get from the same school!
