My son will attend VMI next year and has a birthday coming up (18) and graduation soon. I'd like to give him useful/needed gifts that will be perfect for him while away at school. (I've always given clothing, but no longer an option due to uniforms). Thanks in advance for your suggestions!</p>

<p>he will get a computer at USNA, just keep that in mind. He will need a printer however, as that is not supplied... </p>
<p>as for uSNA, there is nothing they need bring but themselves and a toothbrush... the toothbrush is optional. </p>

<p>Concur with navy2010...money seems to be the best present for a new plebe (and 3/C-1/C!). They don't have a lot of space to store things anyway. Dinner out in DTA and a movie can strain a plebe's budget so it's nice if they can have a little recreational nest egg!</p>
<p>A watch? Are they allowed to keep and wear their watches?</p>
<p>USNA: Not during Plebe summer - may be company specific. Can have watch during Academic year. A sport type that they can also use for running is the best.</p>
