Gift suggestions for AU students

I’m looking for ideas for gifts that might be particularly welcome to my AU freshman. Things like gift cards that are specific to student life at American, items that are uniquely useful on American’s campus, or AU-specific fads.

I might wind up buying a new wallet and filling it with small gift cards from various venues–I was thinking of Subway, CVS, AMC Theater, Safeway, but I need other ideas. What are some of the restaurants, shops, and businesses AU students use most frequently?

Anything else that only AU students know about–a contraption that works particularly well in those built-in storage units in the dorms? A new must-have accessory that’s cropping up all over campus?

Love this question and am looking forward to reading. the responses. I would add a Panera gift card

Other places near campus: Panera, Whole Foods, Best Buy, Container Store. There is a Regal Cinema straight out on Wisconsin accessible by Metro…

My D wanted Starbucks, Whole Foods, Panera, Chipotle, Five Guys and CVS. Also, family members periodically add Eagle Bucks to her card and she uses that around Tenleytown.

Which is the theater in Chevy Chase close to Cheesecake Factory, etc - AMC or Regal?

Not sure about the theater, but Cheesecake Factory is a good idea. Also Maggianos and Starbucks. Maybe $ on Metro Smartcards would be good, too.

The Mazza Gallerie movie theater in Friendship Heights is AMC.

May I suggest Z-burger?! It’s right across from the Tenley Campus. The have great burgers and shakes!

Not sure if there is a sale on these, but how about posters of the limited edition WONK ads…

For some reason, the kids do not seem to like the Wonk campaign. I think it was cute …

SmartTrip card for the Metro! Someone gave one loaded with $50 to my daughter for high school graduation and she commented the other day (after completing her 1st semester) that it was one of her best graduation presents.

Other than that addition, I would second the ones already mentioned. My daughter loves Panera, but they don’t take Dining Dollars so she doesn’t go as often as she might. Already got the Panera gift card for her stocking.

We also recently discovered Chef Geoffs over on New Mexico. Too expensive for the kids on a regular basis, but maybe a gift certificate for there for a special occasion? We have been over a couple of times to see her in a show and were thrilled to find a good restaurant to go to ahead of time that has parking and is close. The kids could walk from campus.
