[] SAT II (if submitted): Didn’t send them
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 96 weighted out of 100 which I guess is a 4.0 when converted… but I don’t know what it is unweighted.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 19 out of 334

[] Volunteer/Community service: Religion teaching, food drives, some fundraisers
[] Essays: The actual common app essay was pretty good (it was about how The Color Purple is a great reflection of who I am even though I’m a white male), but I think the supplement answers are where I really stood out and it’s probably why they accepted me… I got a random burst of creativity
[] Teacher Recommendation: I don’t know for sure I guess, but one I’ve had for 6 straight years and the other really loved me so I’m sure they were great
[] Counselor Rec: Great, I’m assuming

[] Work Experience: work as a theater technician in my school’s theater.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Habitat for Humanity, volunteering at a local food pantry. Other random stuff.
[] Essays: I thought they were pretty good. Writing is my strong point. For famous New Yorker I wrote about spending a day with Heath Ledger. My Tisch supplements were solid too.
[] Teacher Recommendation: AWESOME. The teachers I asked all know me really well.
[] Counselor Rec: Good, she knows me pretty well too.
[] Interview: None.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: YES.
[] Intended Major: Cinema Studies (Tisch/CLAS).
[] State: Chicago, Illinois!
[] School Type: pretty large public, ~2200 people.
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian.
[] Gender: Female.
[] Income Bracket: my mom makes about ~$30k and my dad doesn’t support us.
[] Hooks: Ukrainian immigrant, multilingual, low income, involvement in theatre… not much.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: test scores, rec letters, essays, ECs.
[] Weaknesses: GPA. I’m not a bad student… I take all Honors and AP classes, I just tend to get B+s in them. Seriously, I always end up with an 88 or 89. So borderline. But a B is a B, you know?
[li] Why you think you were accepted: involvement in the arts and passion for film shows in essays.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Wow, this came as a COMPLETE SHOCK. I got the “make travel plans” email. It doesn’t say whether I’m LSP’d or anything, which I expect to be due to my low GPA. Anyway, I’m really glad this came when it did because I’m currently DYING waiting to hear back from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. I don’t know if I’ll be able to go to NYU because their financial aid kind of sucks and, as you can tell, I really need a lot of it.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2160 - 650M, 800CR, 710W
ACT: N/A
SAT II (if submitted): 720 Lit, 550 M1 (embarrassing, I know)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): I don’t know my unweighted. My weighted is a 3.75 on a 4.0 scale.
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): My school doesn’t rank.
AP (place score in parenthesis): English Language (4)
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP English Lit, AP French, AP Macro, Calc 1
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Drama Club (Secretary), Environmental Club (Secretary), Choir, Young Democrats, Ballet/Jazz, Key Club
Job/Work Experience: Cashier in 2009
Volunteer/Community service: Served on my town’s Shade Tree Commission, Key Club events
Essays: I wrote my Common App essay explaining my C in physics. I had never gotten below a B so I thought it probably stood out on my transcript. I’m only average in math and science and I really struggled with physics but never tried to get help until too late. I wrote about how I’ve now realized that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, and knowing that I got a C hurts my pride more than admitting I couldn’t handle physics would have. It was a good essay. I worked really hard on it. My supplement answers were good too I think. I can’t really remember. I remember thinking my haiku was pretty great.
Teacher Recommendation: I got my French teacher and my English/Theatre teacher to write mine. They both loved me, so I presume they wrote me good recommendations.
Counselor Rec: I would guess good. Our old counselor retired last year, so I doubt the rec was anything spectacular because this new one didn’t know me that well. But I have good grades and she seemed to like me when I met her, so it was probably generic but good.
Additional Rec: None

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Linguistics
State (if domestic applicant): Pennsylvania
Country (if international applicant): US
School Type: Public

Reflection
Strengths: Good essays/supplements. SAT score pretty good. I also sent in a supplementary resume and a short note about why I think I would add to NYU.
Weaknesses: C on transcript. Low math SAT/SAT II. Didn’t take science senior year (but I had 5 credits in it already, so not that big of a deal.)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I did some creative things in my application. NYU seems to like creativity.
General Comments: Won’t get the admission packet until Apr. 1, but I guess I’m in CAS b/c I never got an LSP letter. Also, I don’t have word on my laptop, so sorry for the missing colors.

Objective:
SAT I: 1960 (CR 580 M 660 W 720).
ACT: N/A
SAT II: N/A
UW GPA: 4.0 for two years, transferred to much more competitive school and it has ranged from about a 3.3 to a 3.6

Essays: My college counsellor said my big essay was beautifully written and very powerful (I was confident about it after hearing that because I had written about six drafts and she didn’t particularly like them).
Teacher Recommendation: I didn’t read them, but I had recs from last year’s math teacher and creative writing teacher. I also had recs from two of my professors from the Summer Scholar Program at the University of Miami (filmmaking)

Reflection
Strengths: Essays and recs
Weaknesses: GPA. Most students in my school are extremely competitive and the reason we don’t rank is because there are only about 120 students in each class and GPAs are very close (usually within .1 of each other). My Critical Reading score on the SAT wasn’t that great either
Why you think you were accepted: passion for film, involvement in extra-curriculars, SSP, and essay.
General Comments: I was expecting to be rejected so I didn’t really consider attending before this, but now I am seriously loving the idea of attending. I’m waiting to hear from a couple more schools, but I am also going to need financial aid.
