Is it a nice hall? I got it for summer, just wondering how it is compared to others. Does it have wifi?

It’s your pretty standard suite-style hall. I think it’s still undergoing renovations, although I don’t know if those have completed or not.

As for WiFi, according to the FSU Knowledge Base FAQ:
So, no, it does not have WiFi. You will need to have an ethernet cable to access the RESNET internet via a wired connection.

You can check out photos, floor plans, and 3D models of the rooms in Gilchrist on the FSU Housing website for Gilchrist Hall: [The Florida State University - University Housing](http://housing.fsu.edu/housing/ungrad/gilchrist.html)

I got gilchrist for summer too!

Oh I had a question about the wifi although it’ll be irrelevant because i’ll be living in degraff for fall but will all the dorms in fsu be connected with wifi before the start of fall term

Will all of them be connected for WiFi? I highly doubt it. They haven’t done it in the years I’ve been there, so I doubt they will this summer. They could always surprise us, but I haven’t heard or read anything to suggest they are.

I would recommend though that no matter what dorm you are in, that you have an ethernet cable and have the ability to use a wired RESNET connection. I know when I lived in Wildwood there were times when the FSUWIN (WiFi) didn’t want to cooperate but the RESNET wired internet worked just fine.

Gilchrist is a very, very old and historic dorm that was gutted on the inside a few years back and rebuilt. Rooms are not all exactly the same cookie cutter sizes and shapes. It is a suite-style dorm. My D lived there as a freshman and loved the central location. She had no real problems with the physical plant. Nothing in Gilchrist is all that old, except for the bricks.

FSU is upgrading their wireless network. [FSUSecure / NetworkMainCampus / - Network / Information Technology Services / FSU - Information Technology Services](http://its.fsu.edu/Network/NetworkMainCampus/FSUSecure) There are areas of Gilchrist where there is a wireless signal, but plan on being wired, for now.

I lived in Gilchrist last year. It was nice, centrally located, etc.

Gilchrist isn’t undergoing an renovations as one of the previous posters mentioned, but the neighboring Johnston Building was (and still is, to my knowledge).

There is no wifi, but you can take the bridge to Landis and use their wifi-enabled study rooms.

Thanks pasbal I already planned on bringing the ethernet cord but this just reinforced it :D

You’re welcome!

I would recommend a 25 foot long cable or so, just in case. I don’t know the specifics of Gilchrist, but it’s better to be safe and have a cord longer than you need than one that’s too short.

You can find a 25 foot cable in almost your choice of color for about $5-8 at Amazon: [Amazon.com: 25 foot ethernet cable Computer Ethernet Cables](http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_scat_464398_ln?rh=n%3A464398%2Ck%3A25+foot+ethernet+cable&keywords=25+foot+ethernet+cable&ie=UTF8&qid=1306036898&scn=464398&h=645439d8a66add6876881a1994b3e1b647ee400e#/ref=sr_nr_p_n_feature_keywords_0?rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A!493964%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A172456%2Cn%3A172463%2Cn%3A464398%2Ck%3A25+foot+ethernet+cable%2Cp_85%3A2470955011%2Cp_n_condition-type%3A2224371011%2Cp_n_feature_keywords_browse-bin%3A2886479011&bbn=464398&keywords=25+foot+ethernet+cable&ie=UTF8&qid=1306036937&rnid=2886411011) I know that so far I have been happy multiple times that I had a 25 foot long cable instead of one that’s shorter.

why does FSU frown upon using your own router? it would make it so much easier if i could just set up a wireless access point in my room
btw, is there a way to find out who my roommate is?

You will get fall roommate info and room assignments in early June.

No routers. I think they want to know exactly who is accessing what, when. They are in the process of upgrading their wireless network. I don’t think it will be too long before the entire campus is wireless.

@pasbal I definitely will

@lkr you’ll find out who your fall roommate will be on june 11 they’ll probably send it to you first through e-mail about your room and what bed your “assigned” to then you’ll get a follow up in the mail telling you who’s your roommate and their contact information

The letter I got in the mail indicates I got a single room. Pretty excited about this, mainly because I want to be able to focus during the summer session
