Gilman Scholarship- Study Abroad in Argentina

For anyone that is considering a study abroad, you have to check out the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program. I received a scholarship for my study abroad in a Spanish immersion program at the University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was a big help financially and made the difference in allowing me to pursue this opportunity. The experience was great and I would recommend it if it is a possibility for you. If you would like more information, their link is Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. I also created a blog of my experiences in Argentina that you can access at The Adventures of a Gringo in S. America that covers some of the highlights of my trip. Contact me if you have any questions.

Hey, thanks for the information. I’ve been looking at an exchange program my school has to study in Sweden and am interested in applying for the Gilman Scholarship. I just wanted to know what your opinion of the application process was. Was it difficult? The exchange program is next Spring so I still have a lot of time but I’m just trying to plan everything out now. I think if I cannot finance the exchange on my own(limited help from my parents) then I am just not going to go. I’m going to try and get a job next semester but this scholarship would really, really help me.

Well the deadline for the summer and fall scholarship programs just passed!

It wasn’t too difficult, but then again I did it over a year ago therefore, I’m not completely fresh on everything it entailed. I know you will have to write an essay and get a few signatures/clearances by different departments (ex: financial aid) and then once your package is complete you wlll wait to see if you were awarded the scholarship, and how for how much. Students varied from $1000 to $8000.

@robertrulez I’m thinking of studying for Spring 2013. I’m just thinking ahead.

@bme2684 Thanks for the info! So what did you do for your follow-on project? Was it the blog you posted?

Yes Carrie the blog was part of my follow up project. I also had to write several letters, and volunteer my time to speak about my experiences. What might of helped me too, is after completing the study abroad program in Argentina I did a 4 month internship with the U.S. Embassy in Santiago, Chile.
